101 Things to Do in Korea: #1 - DMZ Tour

General Description
No tour of duty or extended visit to South Korea should be without a visit to the DMZ! Located on the 38th parallel, the demilitarized Zone or DMZ is the separation zone that has divided North and South Korea since the Armistice Agreement in 1953. The DMZ extends 2 kilometers on either side of the border and is the most heavily guarded border in the world.

According to korea-dmz.com, the borderline area, where DMZ and the civilian control line pass, partially includes two provinces and 14 cities an counties, namely, the northern parts of the cities of Dongducheon, Goyang, Paju and Gimpo and the counties of Yangju, Yeoncheon, Pocheon, Ganghwa and Ongjin in Gyeonggi-do Province, the northern parts of Cheorwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje and Goseong in Gangwon-do Province and North Gangwon-do.

All visitors must enter the DMZ through the Civilian Control Area. You must have your passport or military ID. All visitors are logged in as an official DMZ visitor.

There are four tunnels dug under the DMZ that connect North and South Korea. North Korea dug these through the years to be used for invasion of the south. The South Korean government believes there are 20 or more tunnels to be discovered. All visitors take a monorail down into the 3rd tunnel.

There is a strict dress code on the DMZ. See the official HQ United Nations Command official DMZ Dress Code Memorandum for full details!

Cool Re: The DMZ

Very Good! Thanks, MIke! We are all proud of our Great Leader! Too bad you are missing our Monsoon Rains in Korea. I just heard Pyongyang has lost over 100 citizens from the rain damage, also. It has been rough for Indonesia, The P.I., a Cyclone for Taiwan and China, and the heaviest monsoon here in 20 years. Aloha!

PS: the time here is actually 10:05, not 11:22.
