Did Akira bring Anime into the mainstream?
I was a big comic book fan when I was in high school. My first experience with Anime was watching Akira. I think that movie introduced a lot of new people to the world of anime. Was there a bigger film before Akira?

I read it was Star Blazers. I remember watching it on local tv after school when Dad was stationed in Wisconsin in 1978.
See the article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Battleship_Yamato which cites the release of Star Blazers as the beginning of the "Golden age of Anime". |

Akira was one of the first anime that I saw, and man did that change things for me! I went from Speed Racer to Akira. Heeeeello! I think what really put it into the mainstream though, we cartoon network. Any thoughts on that???

I love ADV! I'm from Houston, Tx, where they have their headquarters. Their bldg doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's really cool inside. They door tours for us true geeks, so if you get to Houston, make this a definite stop. I totally agree with you on Spike Spenser too ;-)
Have you seen or heard anything about the UFO Ultramaider Valkyrie that they are coming out with? alpope23, I loved Starblazers! I grew up with that and Speed Racer...before they redubed and ruined them. Us old guys got to see the good stuff ;-)

Joe, i'm not a big fan of ADV because they'll buy rights to something (so it can't be fansubbed) and not touch it for years (if at all) an anime i want to bedone is already dubbed in korean but still not in english >_< (i want to see what they take out of it or change)
oh by the way there is anime on korean tv but only in korean or japanese with korean dubs ;.; |

Anime in Korean? Sounds like a good reason for me to try to learn the language while I'm there!
Sorry to hear that you don't like ADV...who knows why they do what they do, but I'm just happy to have a really good source of anime close by.
