Red face School for Kids NCS

My husband may be heading that way in the next few months and the kids and I decided if so we would try and come along. My only #1 worry is schooling for my children on post being we would not be command sponsored. Does anyone with children NCS know how likely it would be to get them in?

There are several places (2ID for example) where there are no DoDDS schools - only expensive private schools. And for bases where there are DoDDS schools, some are better than others regarding how easy it is to get NCS kids enrolled. At which base will your husband be assigned?

Have you considered home schooling? There are several people here who do that, to include some CS families that prefer home schooling over sending their kids to DoDDS schools.

Re: School for Kids NCS

shelliw1, they have a DOD school here. My son got into school on-post being NCS. Now there is a waiting list, believe it or not NCS is 3rd in line for school the first being CS children, the second being contractors children and then NCS children.

Now saying that, I don't think i've heard of any children not getting into school..

Thnigs are very moderized here and getting nicer....

How old are your kids?

I know at Camp Humphreys there -is- an elementary school, I'm not sure about the higher grade levels.

As far as getting them in NCS, I left Korea last November, and my son was able to attend OAES both years (he arrived in 3rd grade, left in 4th).

That being said, however, things fluctuate from year to year and grade level to grade level, so there is *never* any such thing as a sure thing about getting your kids in school. It depends on the number of command sponsored kids, the number of NCS kids, etc. There may be openings in some grade levels, and none in others, it's really unpredictable.

My advice to those coming NCS is to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best, just in case, as you really never know. :) Do your research on homeschooling, just in case, and be prepared to do so if you need, but -definitely- try to check it out.

If you should end up homeschooling, I know there's a very active group of homeschoolers at Osan, and I believe there may be something of the same nature at Humphreys. I also know there were homeschooling kids that were allowed to attend -some- classes at the elementary school.. one boy in my son's 3rd grade class came in only for Math and Science classes..and he was granted full access to the school's library, gym classes, and after school activities, as well.

There are a couple of folks on the board here that have kids at Humphreys Elementary..chucksnee would be a good one to ask ,as would be Ms Price. :)

HTH,

Dee :)

Re: School for Kids NCS

My children would be 5th and 7th graders when we were to arrive. I am going to try the Humphrys web page to see if there is upper grade there. Thanks for the info!!

Re: School for Kids NCS

OK I just looked online and all it was showing was an elementary school for Humphrey's. Does anyone have middle or high school kids NCS or otherwise at Humphrey that can give me an idea of where they would go to school. I would love any info.

7th grade would go to the nearest junior high school, which would be at Osan.

Order of merit is based on when you sign your kids up for the waiting list. NCS kids already in the system have priority over kids just getting started.

Here a listing of who is eligible:

Department of Defense Dependents Schools in
Korea
Eligibility for Enrollment

The four general categories of enrollment eligibility are:

Priority I Space required tuition free: Command sponsored dependents of U.S. military and DoD civilians with orders to Korea. Space required, tuition paying: Representatives of Federally Connected contractors.

Priority II Space available, tuition paying, Federally Connected: Dependents whose sponsors are employees of the State Department and other U.S. governmental agencies, Red Cross, USO, representatives of Federally Connected contractors, etc.

Priority III Space available, tuition free: Non-command sponsored dependents of U.S. military.

Priority IV Space Available, tuition paying: Dependents of private U.S. citizens (including retired U.S. military) and citizens of foreign countries.

The phone number at Humphreys Elementary (dialing from the States): 011-82-31-691-9527

Here's the school's webpage: http://www.humphreys-es.pac.dodea.edu/

They are indeed planning on leaving the 7th and 8th graders at Camp Humphrey's next year instead of busing them to Osan like they currently do. I don't know how much space they will have though. Rumor on the block is that it will be harder for NCS students to get into school next year.
