pets & housing @ Humphreys?

Recently found out we're PCS-ing to Humphreys. We're being told that we'll get command sponsorship no problem. Here's my dilemma... we have 2 labrador retrievers. They are mellow 6-yr-olds that are well trained and part of the family and we do not want to leave them here. However, I also have 2 kids in high school and would prefer to live on post if possible. my question... Is there housing available on Humphrey's that allows (large) pets? If not, does anyone have any experience bringing pets to Korea and what's it like living off post with animals and/or kids?? Any advice is welcome...

Thanks!

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

The old base commander had a policy of no pets in housing. There just isn't any room here to properly walk dogs. That and people didn't pick up after them. I haven't heard if the new commander is allowing them or not. There are a few people on here that live in housing on base and should be able to tell you for sure.

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

We're not in housing yet but I do have some info on your question. The dog run areas have been completed so dogs are allowed on post again. On our orders it specifically says that we can only have one pet. I'm pretty sure that that is the standard. That being said there are always exceptions being made for whatever reasons. I would call ahead to the housing office and ask. I do know some people who live off post because they have three dogs and they're not allowed to live on post with them. Again, for a definitive answer housing is your best bet.

011-82-505-753-6519 ask for Ms. Bradford.

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

Thanks Michelle... you are so helpful :)

Hubby's contacting Ms Bradford to try to find out what our housing situation will be.

They'd have to make an exception for us to bring them, as there is no way I could separate them and only bring one....they would die of depression without each other.

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

HI,
We moved to Humphreys in January and in February brought our 4 yer old Lab who is 75 pounds over. She did well on the flight but was in her kennel for 24 hours. We live off post now but will be moving into housing in two weeks. We didn't have a problem finding a place to live here with a large dog. I was SUPPER worried, before we came, that we wouldn't find a place to live with her. When we found out we were coming to Korea they were not allowing dogs in housing but now are. I don't know how many pets you can have in housing. If you can only have one I would suggest living off post. We found a great place and would stay iin it if it came to giving up our dog. I take my dog to post to run in the dog runs and there are other dogs large dogs here. My husband knows someone who wants to get the dogs together to play. Its not the easiest place to live with her but we couldn't leave her for 2 or 3 years. If you have any question please let me know. Liz

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

Liz -- thanks so much for the info. That is promising. I really wanted to live on post because I have to teenage boys, and I think they'd have a little more freedom and access to their friends that way - hopefully it will work out.

I'm curious - do you live in the new towers? Or is there other housing for people like us with large dogs?

My labs love to play with other dogs - maybe we can set up a play date when we get there this summer if it works out that we can bring the dogs.

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

I agree with your decision to live on base with your two sons. They can walk everywhere and be close to friends. I can't wait to be close to my daughters friends. We love where we are but it will be nice to be close to other families. We will be living in the older of the 3 towers. Our dog has always had a yard (sometimes small) so this will be interesting to see how she does. Right now she is content sun bathing on the deck so hopefully she will continue to do that on post. All the apts have decks. I'm sure kenai would love a playdate!

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

One more thing. We called Korean Air mid January to get all the info on our pup flying and it was not a problem to fly a 75 pound dog over. When we went to make the resevations a few short weeks later and we were told that the dog and Kennel had to weigh less than a certain amt. Can't remember what the weight was. Somewhere between 60-70 pounds. Kenai and her kennel were more like 80 pounds. We had to have her fly on Asiana. We were told that this was temporary and that Korean Air would be lifting this regulation but not sure when. Just thought I'd give you the heads up. Good Luck.

We were at a BBQ this past weekend and I was able to see the dog run area. Boy is it small! Are there other areas or just one?

Re: pets & housing @ Humphreys?

I know there are definitely two of them and I think there are actually three. They tried to put one close to each building. You're right they are small. We take our dog to the park in Anjung-ri and let him run. He loves it!
