Cell phone advice

Hello everyone. My husband is at Camp Humphreys now and I will be there in a few weeks. I have a few questions about cell phones that I hope someone can answer. Do they have different carriers there like they do in the states? Any recs on what carrier to use? He's talked to a few people and they advised him to get a contract phone instead of phone that uses minutes from a card. Is this good advice? Where at Humphreys is the best place to get a phone? Any other info and how cell phones work there would be appreciated.

You can do a little of both. If you will be doing alot of calling to the states then a card phone would be best. If you will be doing alot in in country calling then the contract phone would be best along with a calling card installed on the phone.

There is no real way to tell what carriers are here, who ever makes the phone is the carrier, SK Telcom, Anycall and there are a few others. It is basically who gives you the best deal for in country.

The best phone card i found has been VictoryII, they have them at the PX. $20 will get you 240 "true" minutes to the states. I say true becasue some cards i have gotten when you talk for 20 minutes they charge you 30 minutes.

Hope this helps.

Besides cell phone service, I would recommend that you look into a company that offers VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) like Vonage or Packet8 before you leave the states. For about $25.00 a month you can set up a stateside phone number that hooks into your high speed internet connection and will allow you to call back to the states without additional charges and will allow people to call you for the cost of a normal in the states call. Doesn't solve your cell phone issue, but may save you a few bucks...

Exactally, the only problem with vonage is that they do not have all area codes, so people may still have to call you long distance but not at the international rate....

Is Packet8 a internet only (computer only) phone?

We have Vonage already. We just need to find an apartment to get everything set up.

Question Different Frequencies?

I was told before I left the States that I should sell my US cellphone there and buy a phone here, because they are not compatible. If you are an expert in this area, please post now, it could help someone coming to Korea.

I have Vonage and I love it.

I was able to get a local number in my hometown, so my parents and other relatives can call me for free. And since most people in the States now have cellphones with free calling at night and on weekends, that even people who don't live in the local calling area can call me for free also if they choose the time to call properly.

I got the $15 500 minute plan and it's working out great. Most of the time I call first, and then tell them to call me back so that we can talk for free.
