Hi, All. I just found out I'll be stationed at Osan (I'm Air Force) and my husband is trying to get to the Hump (Army). We'll both be able to live off base and I will be bringing my NCS dependants (mother and daughter). We're wondering how far it is from both bases (or in Army terms, Posts)? I've heard anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes depending on who I asked. Is there any decent non-military housing right in the middle? All I know is Songton and Pyeungtek are the two cities. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I just drove it in about 30 minutes...about 12 miles...It takes a little longer becasue of the roads and how fast you can go...

As for houses in-between...their are some but It may not be advisable....That would have to be something to check with the local housing office.

I went with a friend from Osan to the Hump, and we went out the ROK gate. That took about 20-30 minutes but there wasn't a lot of traffic. There were several really nice, small apartments out that way and it was much cleaner than out the main gate. The realtors around here will no doubt be able to find you something nice to live in:)

The southernmost part of Songtan and the uppermost area of Pyongtaek City
are darn near adjoining. You can get a satisfactory apartment in the middle somewhere I am certain. The rent will be affordable for now, and the property can't help but appreciate. Know that you will be more immersed in Korean culture, and neighbors that understand English will be pretty much missing. You will necessarily learn some Korean quickly. You need to know this in advance. Some people may love it, others may miss having neighbors to talk to, and convenience to American Doctors and Base shopping. You make the decision. At this time, with no hospital at Humphreys until 2012 or later, I'd put mom & daughter within a short taxi ride of Osan. I would not set anything in concrete , even if your husband gets "pinpoint orders" to the Hump. The Army is notorious for changing assignments on a whim, even after arrival! He will go where they need him.

Thank you all for your responses. I forgot to mention that I'm Korean (don't speak a lick though) and my mom is Korean so she'll be fine. Trying to teach the daughter both languages and I'm learning as well. Hopefully, my husband will be able to work out an assignment at Osan since he's an Engineer. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I know quite a few people who live in Osan but work at Humphreys, from school teachers to soliders. If you are willing to commute it's not unreasonable. My husband wanted to move to Osan and commute to Humphreys but I nixed that because I didn't want my daughter to change schools.

Osan is more compact and accessable, and I am prejudiced. Maybe because I lived there once. Humphreys is scheduled to be larger and all, but it will take years.
Not giving a better background about yourself in the profile can cause useless advice and rhetoric when we have to assume or guess about who we are talking to. Hopefully all readers will now go and update their profile with at least some information- that's where I go before attempting to give advice, I want to get off in the right direction by knowing if one is really new to Korea, or has been here before and doesn't need the beginner course!
