Gps
I'm wanting to buy a vehicle GPS unit. Would it be better to buy something in the States and then purchase map data in Korea or just wait until I arrive and then buy a Korean GPS?

Re: Gps
That is an excellent question!
If you are looking for something for Korea I would wait until you got to Korea. I have a feeling the U.S. ones are not compatible. I am not sure though as that is just a hunch. Better to be safe than to buy something you can't use for a full year.

Re: Gps
This is the only site I found that has data for US gps models. They're kind of pricy, I would just like to buy the data only. Looks to be in english.

Re: Gps
You can check this place out.
http://news.thomasnet.com/fullstory/476085/3285 Also, I typed Korea Navigation System in google and there were a lot of companies on there. I'll ask my Army Korean friends if they can get a nav system for Korea in English.

Re: Gps
I am a little skeptical after reading the information on the links. I did not recall seeing any clearly state they were capable of read outs in English. We had one that was on a lease for $60 per month. It warned you of the cameras. albeit, a no brainer since you were warned well on advance of the upcoming cameras.
I have been using a Garmin Legend in the mountains and I really like it. It has the major roads for the US. The $150 was not a bad investment a few years ago. I am not sure if you will be able to order direct if you attempt to have it shipped to Korea. There may be an international law prohibiting shipping of a GPS?

Re: Gps
I brought a gps on the plane with me so there should be no problem shipping one. That rascal has saved me so much trouble here!

Re: Gps
One thing i've noticed is that you really don't need a GPS.All roads are numbered even on a Koeran map and it is easy to follow. I made it from camp humphreys to inchoen with no problem, just had someone write the numbers of the highway down and he told me how to get to the first road i needed and it was simple.

Re: Gps
alpope,
What brand and model? Are you able to get map data? I've been wanting to buy a Garmin C330 but am worried there won't be map data for it. I would think any reroutable data would work. |

Re: Gps
I don't need one, but I like gadgets, so I checked them out at the Electronics center. They have many, with English, Chinese or Korean software. It is cheaper to get one in the US, with latest Kn software in English. US employees and Military with mail privileges, no problem if you take it when you leave. Don't know about other folks. Here is the Korean Customs Site. Looks like most electronics are taxed 8 percent.
