Dell E521 first impression

The new Dell E521 with dual core Athlon has a cool looking white/silver case.

Pro
- Less power consumption (the thing is running at 1Ghz if you are not doing anything intensive)
- Quiet, very quiet
- Case looks nice
- Has PCI-E slot, no AGP though
- Windows Vista Capable (not that it's a big deal)

Con
- Has only 2 PCI slots
- Has no PATA controller, only 4 SATA controller
- Can put my removable drive case in there without sawing/cutting the front panel
- Only use USB keyboard/mouse (there goes my regular KVM switch--luckily I have two monitors)
- Only have 6 USB ports. With 2 being used up by the keyboard and mouse, it leaves me only 2 ports in the back and 2 in the front.

Other than that I can't complain for the $200 I spent on it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131014

that plus a case and you got a better system and a heatsink

and you have 4/5 of your problems.

5/5 if you find a full sized atx case

Re: Dell E521 first impression

Yeah, but that board already costs half of the price i paid for the whole computer. I think i can buy an adaptor for the PS/2 to USb adaptor or something. As for the removable drive case, I guess I will just have to use my external usb case for the drive. I forgot to mention that I can't replace the DVD-rom with a DVD-writer without buying a SATA one either. Luckily I also have one in an external USB case, in case I ever need to use one. The E521 case is regular size, not micro.

Re: Dell E521 first impression

Taichan,

Yup, you are right. This is a BTX board/case. I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. When I opened the case last night, I noticed that I had to take the panel off on the right hand side. But I thought nothing of it lol.
The case is too nice to throw away though. I think I will just try to get the adaptors and another 512mb of ram for it. I don't want to spend money to get a new case and a new mainboard. Although I do want another All-in-Wonder card to go with it. I'll have to check and see if I can find a cheap one. lol.

Re: Dell E521 first impression

Thanks. I am thinking of something around a $100. I don't need it to be a powerful card, just need the All-In-Wonder functionality. It has to be PCI express though. ATI had a great sale on those for awhile. Should have bought it then. Just for reference, now I am running a 9600XT AIW in my old P4 rig.
