Do Koreans take off their shirts at the beach?

I have never been to a Korea beach, but I noticed this picture.

Almost every Korean is wearing a shirt! Why is this?

Mike

Ha ha...Koreans abhor going out in the sun. They don't want a tan. It's a holdover from days past when the lighter skinned you were the higher status you had. I always get a laugh watching Korean women walking down the street on a beautiful sunny day holding a newspaper/umbrella over themselves or wearing one of those goofy sun visors. To each his own. Personally nothing looks sexier than a tan.

Re: Do Koreans take off their shirts at the beach?

A co-worker (Korean-American) just got back from the east coast yesterday and he said there were pretty Korean girls in bikinis all over the place. He said most of them travel from Seoul, change into their bikinis at the train station (located near the beach), and walk down to the beach all ready to go.

I don't think the young Koreans (sub-30 year olds) have the same attitude about suntans as the older ones.

Back in the day, if a woman had a tan, that meant she probably worked outdoors in a rice paddy and was of low social status.

Although the young Koreans are aware of this old way of thinking, they know it's just an old-fashioned way of looking at things and prefer looking sexy (having a nice tan) over worrying about what older people might think about it.

Re: Do Koreans take off their shirts at the beach?

If anybody ever finds or hears of a beach where the women take off their shirts (including bikini tops) in Korea, please do tell because I don't think such a beach exists here.

Re: Do Koreans take off their shirts at the beach?

You are right CEC..I saw some swimwear at Boyang on the far south end, which is not where the trendies go..but that was the only beach I saw females wearing swim gear, and looking back I think that was towards the evening when the sun was setting.
In the daytime, they sit in tents with layers of clothing on...or just won't go to the beach in case they get some color, and the umbrellas are always there..
And I particularly love the white face makeup...you cannot buy any other here and I have started wearing this light stuff too, which makes me look tired.
Grin!!!

Re: Do Koreans take off their shirts at the beach?

Avoiding the sun is the norm in most asian countries. Probably keeps down the rate of skin cancer. Sexy? Tanned (brown) skin is about as sexy as brown teeth in some cultures. Of coure brown (black) teeth in Vietnam is considered attractive.

Dude, it seems that nobody is in the water meaning it's probably cold as hell. It looks like the picture was taken when the beach was closed for some reason, and that explains why most of the people aren't dressed to swim or get baked in the Sun.....
You go down to Tower Hotel, Shilla Hotel, Hyatt pool side, and you will see a whole bunch of people lying down to get tanned.
