Yes, that's a good point. Sometimes I think that the only Korean who's come to accept that I like and can certainly eat spicy food is my boyfriend. It doesn't matter how many times I go out for dinner with my cooworkers. They're absolutely amazed every time I can eat kimchi. And then they say, "Isn't it spicy?"
Shsong, what you have to realize is that there are many different kinds of spicy foods all over the world. It isn't just Korean food. Many North Americans love Mexican food, and it can be really spicy. In fact, my boyfriend had a harder time eat jalapenio (spelling?) peppers than I did. Some Italian sauces are also really spicy. But, yes you will meet some North Americans who are most comfortable with meat, potatoes and gravy. |

Re: Favorite Korean side dish?
hmmmm, its hard to decide on a favorite because I love almost everything I have had from the Korean menu. I guess I do love the radish and cucumber kimchee the most. The cabbage kimchee is a close second as long as it does not have too much fish oil in it. The one thing I had in Korea back in 93, that I absolutely hated and will never, ever eat again was that red tofu. It smelled like crap, it tasted like crap and it made me crap :). So much for the brave westerner eating along with everyone else, like he enjoyed it.

Re: Favorite Korean side dish?
my favorite korean side-dish, isn't really a side dish, I love kimchi, but I love (english attempt at korean coming) bu-dae-che-gae (soldiers soup) man I loved the crap outta that stuff. the spicer the better, and yes I dont know why Koreans think we Americans can not handle the spice, everytime I went out with my korean friends eventhough I had been with them before they always asked if it was too spicy... im always like hell nah bro, lets add some more hot peppers, lol spicy food is so good, thats prolly why I put tobasco sauce on EVERYTHING i eat

Sook Dok is made out of mugwort or wormwood. I believe if you just go down to one of the Dok stores, they should have them. I am surprised though as Sook Dok is a bit bitter, to me at least.sookdok.jpg |

Re: Favorite Korean side dish?
Yes, There are many Kalbi restaurants and sushi restaurants and restaurants and restaurants. it's the side dishes that make the difference. I have eaten in restaurants all over the peninsula.
I love most all kinds of kimchi, of course, cucumber kimchi, and mul (water) kimchi are delicious. There are even vaiations of each. I like Blue Opera's Pork Cutlet and salad with.....I can't think of the name..

Re: Favorite Korean side dish?
I have tried just about everything, and love every bit of it....except one thing. Its a dark brown, cold noodle soup. I won't even try it, looked nasty to me. haha
