Re: Dumb Questions
Okay, another stupid question...
What is the significance of a barber pole (as in the red, white and blue Old Timey U.S. sort) on the top of a house? I know it's not the same as the significance in the U.S., and doesn't indicate what we'd call barber shops... but it's something ..umm..sexually related, isn't it? :) LOL.. The reason I ask is that I now have a great view from my window of the one on the top of the house right across the alleyway from us. :) Guess our 9 year old won't be going to meet the neighbors anytime soon! LOL :) Thanks for the patience and your answers! Dee :) |

Re: Dumb Questions
I THINK that the ones that are double spinning ones are the bad ones, but the single spinning one is really a barber shop. I think thats how it explained to me, but I really can't remember anything anyway.

For Nearlywild: Yes, always in that order. No taps at 5 pm, unless it coincides with a funeral! As far as I know.
**************************************** For MD: Barber poles are barber shops in some instances, and beauty shops. Normally, if there is more than one pole, it can include a massage parlor, which may or may not be a legitimate business. I've seen as many as 3 together. Yes it can have further significance. Barber shops are off limits to the Military member, purportedly for sanitary indiscretions. There is a Korean saying about "Barber shop girls" -I was told they keep saying -"Next"... To be sure, you need to judge each establishment individually. I have a civilian friend who today goes to a downtown barber, saving about $2.70 each visit, over the PX price. If I had kids, I'd find one. If you can find one, a barber or beauty school is very cheap, just like in the US! They love to have foreign girls for victims. I used to know one years ago, and really had a good time there. (Watch out for the dye-do an allergy test first!) |

Re: Dumb Questions
Hey I have a problem, I bought bread and then 2-3 days later it's half molded!!! What can I do to stop this from happening? I don't recall ever having this problem in the states, and considering how much I am paying for bread, only getting to eat a half a dozen pieces doesn't see very fair.

Re: Dumb Questions
I had the same problem , the only way I could get around it is to freeze my bread

Re: Dumb Questions
A barber shop pole is called a "이발소 기둥." I seem to recall once seeing a shop that had four poles... should have taken a picture of it.

I've been buying bread from a Korean bakery for years and have never had a problem. It might be a day or two fresher. But I agree, keep it in the fridge and not out on the shelf or in a cubboard and you shouldn't have any more problems. |

Re: Dumb Questions
Some of the bread we get at the commissary has been frozen and re-thawed. It is often slightly damp when you buy it.
Listen to Willy- when you get home , keep it in the refrigerator. We have done that for years. South Carolina humidity taught us that. Works fine. |

Re: Dumb Questions
Speaking of refridgerators...does anyone have a problem w/a strong smell of what I believe to be kimchi in there?? I put 2 boxes of arm & hammer in the fridge and 1 in the freezer but it doesn't seem to cut it. If we buy ice cream in the containers it tastes bad after a day of being in there. So, I'm afraid to put my bread in there and have it tasting like that too. Any suggestions other than what we've already been doing??
