Re: What do you think about Korean culture ?

There is much to see and learn about Korea. It's true history is long and rich in tradition and is intertwined with the Chinese and Japanese, but is unique in many ways.

You may not find many friends here who agree with you!
Foreigners find the story of Korean History very interesting.
Admiral Yi Sun Shin seems very brilliant.
The unique, simple alphabet was a great invention.
The Hermit Kingdom time was maybe not so great, but every country has good and evil in it's history.

Hmm.... Are you talking about Lee Sun-Shin ?
Sure ! Admiral Lee Sun-Shin, he was great person.
But he didn't get recognition to leaders of Cho-Sun age. You know ?
His father was a traitor at that time. you know ?
So, the leaders group dislike him even though his achievement.
I know you don't believe me. But It is not important. I will tell you the true.
Im native Korean and My view point is the true.
I will show for you different point of view.

Cool Re: What do you think about Korean culture ?

I can belive that you believe what is true. We foreigners only know what we are allowed to read. Just like the North Koreans cannot know the truth as their history books are false. History has many faces. Like the Japanese history books. They show Japan as the greatest country! The truth is often hidden.

Re: What do you think about Korean culture ?

For those who can get their hands on the current issue of Seoul magazine, Robert Koehler has a really good interview with You Hong-june who is director of the Korean government's Cultural Heritage Administration. He has long championed improving the apathy many Koreans have about their cultural heritage and has been the driving force in fixing many historical sites and improving access to the the for the general public.

Korea actually is filled with many cultural sites it is just they are not well known. The city of Gyeongju is really quite an impressive place to visit with its many ancient Shilla tombs, buildings, artifacts, and temples. Buyeo is another city filled with similar sites from the ancient Baekje kindgom.

Seoul has a lot of potential with its many historical sites combined with the many natural features that surround the city to be an international attraction. However, it will never happen until the chaotic nature of the city improves along with cleaning up all the pollution. Seoul is going in the right direction at least with Mayor Oh's current campaign to green the city that was begun under Lee Myung-bak.

Re: What do you think about Korean culture ?

Nobody really thinks that the area they grew up in is that "special" because they see it every day and it becomes ordinary.

Growing up in New Hampshire I was always suprised by the "idiots" who came up just to look at red and orange leaves on the trees in the fall. Now I miss that.

Hangul is an amazing alphabet. Easier to write than ABCs. We learned it in two hours one day in language school. Don't need to worry about spelling. Toughest part of learning Korean is the grammar, picking up the vocabulary, and learning Chinese characters.
