Getting Around
I'm trying to figure out the Korail system and getting frustrated.
What I want to know is how to get around to the different US Military bases in South Korea. I will have friends at Yongsan, Humphreys, Kunsan, and Casey. Can someone breakdown the system for me? I wanna be fiercely independent when I get there!! |

Re: Getting Around
Up until about a month ago you could get the train schedule in Engllish, but Korean Rails website changed that. To get near Humphreys you go to Pyongtaek. To get to Yongsan go to Seoul. Kunsan is somewhat difficult to get to as you have to make connections. Some places it is easier to get to other ways such as bus.

Re: Getting Around
The train system can get confusing because they have different classes of trains. The metro is the slowest and makes the most stops. They cost anywhere from 900 won to I think 2600 won to get all over the Seoul area. You would use this one to get between Osan and Humphreys. However, the station is in Pyeongtaek which is still about a 20 minute bus ride to get from the station to the actual military base. Then there are what I call the fast trains, but they have a different name. I think Saemaeul and Mungwha are the names of the lines for this train. The cost is about double the metro cost but get you anywhere around Seoul in half the time. They make fewer stops, have assigned seating, and a restroom on board. You would use this one or the regular metro to get to Yongsan. The only downside to this train is that they don't have as many departures as the metro so you have to wait longer for this train to leave unless you know exactly what time the train is scheduled to leave. Then there are the express trains which I believe are called KTX trains. These trains are really fast and are mostly used for long distance travel. You probably would not use them just to travel around Seoul, but you would probably use this one to get to Kunsan. I'm not sure what the cost is for this one. As for Casey, I know the metro has a stop near Casey but I don't know if there is a train that goes up there. I hope someone can expand on what I am saying or maybe correct anything they see is wrong.
The bases around the Seoul area have buses that do nothing but drive between the bases all day, so you can always take the bus if you want to. |
