Funny Korea
Is there anything about Korea or the people or just something you've seen here that makes you laugh or wonder why?
For example while waiting for the school bus one day I saw a man walk out in the middle of a busy street to take a picture of a manhole cover. I consistantly watch people walk next to an empty sidewalk or walk right down the middle of the street dispite there being cars coming. At first I thought what the heck is wrong with thtese people, now I just shake my head and chuckle |

Re: Funny Korea
I always love it when Koreans stop in the middle of the road to use the ATM.

Re: Funny Korea
I think it's funny that people leave their cars in neutral and you push them out of the way to get your car out. I'm glad that a) I wasn't driving and b) someone else was there to show me. If I had gone alone I probably would have sat in the car and cried:)

Re: Funny Korea
Things have change a lot; when I was there the transportation system wasn’t quite up to snuff yet, so you can imagine the first time I saw a guy on a bicycle hauling a pig to market.
For the longest time I thought that the pigs were dead, but that wasn’t the case. The pigs were alive, just K.O.ed, They would take a “big bat” that resembled a baseball bat, only bigger, and KO the pig, tie them onto the back of their bicycle and hurry to the market before the pig woke up. Now if that wasn’t bad enough, things got even better when the pig “came too” on the way to the market. ![]() Johnnie Rouse |

Re: Funny Korea
I'll tell you one thing that I don't think is funny but I do wonder why. Why they don't use car seats for small children. I just thought it was strange that my washer has a lock on it so that children can't open the door and be scalded by the hot water but they aren't protected in cars.

Re: Funny Korea
How about...
You know you're in Korea too long when you touch your hand to your elbow when giving cash to the American girl working at the commissary Or... You know you're in Korea too long when your 3 year old greets people with "annyahaseyo" (sp?)

I'm not familiar with the lock on the washing machine door. Either an American did it, or times are a-changing in Korea!
Perhaps you have seen me write on safety in Korea before, but generally their government never previously considered spending 10 cents on safety. Car seats are still unfamiliar to most folks here. If they somehow become convinced that car seats save lives, they may buy them. This is not a Christian country in overall belief. Human life is not so important here as Americans were brought up to believe. Replacing an employee who has an accident at work is easy. Hire another. Spending corporate money to protect a stupid or careless employee never crossed the mind of an employer. In recent years attitudes are changing; labor unions have been formed. They even sell insurance now. This is NEW in Korea, and most people don't have ANY insurance. Leaving money to your family if you die seems strange. If your'e dead, you don't care anymore. It is not your problem. They are slowly becoming more Westernized in their thinking. But it will be a long time before the government get carried away enough to spend money on protecting citizens to the degree that they will legislate car seats. They surprised me with the seatbelt law, and the no talking on a cell phone while driving law. I suspect those laws were passed to increase revenue, rather than as a protective measure. |

Looks like the truck is maxed out with the cargo! Must not be too heavy, the tires are still rather round. Good shot.
Here's a shot I took in by the fountain in Mapo. One brother was more adventurous than the other! Last edited by Mr. Joe : 12-01-2007 at 06:12 PM. |
