In the US, most of us seem to accept that the streets and highways should be kept clean, just as our homes and yards. Some parts of the US, and some city streets seem to be treated as outside of our "responsible area" and therefore some of us less thoughtful and less educated folks throw bags of leftover food, and cigarettes and cups and bottles out the car window and don't care if it gets picked up. The last time I drove through our most southern states it was a disgrace. Hopefully that is changing.
It used to be Italy was a mess. Folks threw everything out the window of their homes into the street. Maybe that has changed. Some Koreans still do the same- it seems to be someone else's problem. Laws are changing in Korea, and in Seoul it is now the foreigners who cause most of the street trash, either from ignorance of a possible fine, or laziness. You have to purchase the proper disposable bag, also, or the truck won't take it. Spitting and blowing noses are not on the illegal list yet, as far as I know, but who knows? Singapore has no spitting or chewing gum in public; the cleanest city in the world! |

Re: Why do Koreans have bad social skills?
I agree with you on that one. I've had to carry trash around or stash it in my purse because there is no trash can around. Even though the Koreans dump there trash where ever seems convient I can't bring myself to follow suit.

Re: Why do Koreans have bad social skills?
I had that trash problem, wasn't much of a problem to be honest unless you buy alot of drinks etc going from A to B.
Blowing noses, spitting I have never seen that. |

OK- let's not start getting vulgar like on some of the forums where they all spell English with a small "E". Please don't forget this is a family forum.
Capt. America- in one of your first posts you did say this: "Its just gross! They always spit and even blow their noses onto the street! Maybe I should teach social skills instead of English! "This, of course , led ALL OF US to believe you were a school teacher. Later you denied being a school teacher, twice. Sorry we have little information on you, except that you are going to be here for perhaps a month, live somewhere much nicer than anyplace you think I can afford, and so far have not been favorably impressed with anything in Korea. Some of us truly understand how you got those first impressions, some are beginning to think you deserve what you get, and others think you may not be wound too tight because you seem to have forgotten that you intimated that you taught English. So, that sums it up. I'll try to keep the members from crucifying you, and hope you will work with us. I would like to help you get some enjoyment during the short time you will be with us! If you truly want to trade insults, may I suggest the ESL teachers forum, or Daves ESL Forum. Most of us here are associated with the military in some way, and have learned the secrets of enjoying Korea, with all its faults. I would like to invite you to join us in making the best of the time you have here. We really can be helpful if you will work with us. What do you say? |

Re: Why do Koreans have bad social skills?
I stand corrected. For the record, I'm not a teacher. Not that I have anything against teachers...
