Is this a nice camera?

I think this is the place to post this...

I'm not a professional photographer, but for a beginner, is this a nice camera?

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5K

I'm simply looking for one that can produce pretty good photos...without breaking my wallet!

Eddie, basically you want to get something with at least 3 mega pixels and has at least a 256 megabytes memory stick. I use a 512 megabytes and it is a lot! It is almost like a camcorder as I can take an hour of video or thousands of pictures. How many mega pixels does this camera have? It looks like 1.8 mega pixels. I think that will be fine for basic images for you and your family, but will not cut it for professional work.

Nah, I'm not looking for a basic, pocket-sized one; already have a Sony W1. I'm interested in taking those really nice quality photos...almost like the ones you see the professionals use, but not quite. I don't want to spend $1,500-$2,000 on the camera and equipment (example: Canon EOS Rebel XT or Nikon D50). I figure cameras like the one I have pictured (which is the 5.1MP model) can come in between a basic and professional SLR cameras.

Camera

Yes, I'm no expert, but I've seen the specs, and it is a fine camera.

I got a Casio Exlim EX-P505 at the Christmas sale, and love it. It is similar, but also does videos!

Talk to some photographers before you spend the money.

I've also considered this one... seems a little easier to use. There's a few sample shots (all types of shots taken with color enhancement, max zoom setting, auto-mode, or manual mode) in Amazon people post up...pretty nice. Any opinions? Looks like you can take sloppy pictures without even thinking and they come out nice.

It's the Canon Powershot S2

But it doesn't have a Leica lens like the Panasonic.

You can get a 3 mega pixels camera for about $150-$200. I few years ago they were very expensive, but they are not too bad now.

Yeah, I've owned those types up until now, but the pictures just aren't good enough for me these days...need one level up! I need a little more quality in the pictures now like better light capture, image stablizer, faster/slower shutter speed...stuff like that. The Elph or W1 I own now just can't cut it. Cameras like that are only good outdoors on a sunny day.

LOL! Photographers say if I'm not prepared to spend over two grand on a camera and equipment, I'll never get the same quality photos they can take! As for advice on the cameras I have pictured here, they say it may be better than the average digital camera, but doesn't even come close to the stuff they use.

If you are looking for a camera that will give you pictures as good as a 35 mm then your photo friends are correct. The power shot cannon is an excellent camera and with a good photo printer it will give above average pictures. If you are just looking for eletronic media display they are excellent for the price and will give good quality resolution pics for web or any eletronic format. I have only had experience with a friends powershot but the other camera is a good buy on paper.
