Penis-Pinching Teacher Fined W5 Million

This is too much! I am glad the Korean Supreme court is not spending their time on silly cases.

Quote:
The Supreme Court has declared zero tolerance for the pinching of a child's penis in jest during class time by his elementary school teacher.
The court on Thursday upheld the conviction of a teacher identified as Lee for calling a fourth-grader to the front of the class in March 2004 and pinching his groin to a call of, "Now, let's see if you have a pepper (Korean slang for penis)!" The teacher reportedly repeated the act four more times until May.

The court heard the boy confided to his friends that he hated what the teacher was doing but could not bring himself to tell his parents what was going on. The situation grew so severe that the boy required counseling.

The court fined Lee a total of W5 million (US$5,000), reasoning that even if his actions stemmed from an intention to educate, the method was inappropriate.
This is the new punishment for spammers on USFK forums. They will get their penis pinched by an old Korean lady!

I didn't know sick things like this still occurred these days. However, this is/was an issue in Korea...I bet four out of five Koreans have experienced some sort of child molesting trauma as they grew up in this society. I think it's pretty sad.

That teacher should have saw some jail time, IMO.

Pepper -Pinching Primer

You all need to know that back in the 60's most children under four or five didn't have diapers, and wandered the streets followed by happy dogs. The streets were mine fields where there was a scarcity of dogs! Also, it has NEVER been a crime for parents, even neighbors, to touch or fondle small boys in public. Photos of young boys without pants were displayed proudly! Photo studios will still put these photos in the window. (There is one in Itaewon, across from Burger King!) It was a matter of pride! This culture doesn't look at everything as we do, and still considers a "pepper" as something to be proud of! Remember, having a son still is a cause for celebration in Korea! It goes back to the days of Kings and Queens, and not having a son was, and still can be, a stigma for a wife. It can still be used as a reason for divorce! A son can carry on the family line, and is expected to care for the parents in their old age. A girl, yet today, by some traditionally minded families, is not so special, and birthdays are not as festive, if noticed at all. (They just eat rice, and then go away and marry, to serve their husband's family.) Sexual "Harassment" as we have been taught to consider unthinkable, is not at all unthinkable in Korea. Now- if the pinching-teacher in question is a Male and the student is older, the story can change
drastically; and it did. Depending on the teacher's age and when and where he grew up, should have been a factor in the judges' decision.
Girls- if you are on a crowded subway or bus- don't slap and scream at the first man or boy that may bump into or rub against you! Just let them know you don't appreciate it with a sharp look or maybe a push. Orientals (and some Europeans) do not have as wide a "Personal space" as Westerners do. They have never been taught to be so darn sensitive. Argue with me if you wish, but don't expect any sympathy if your pride gets hurt on the subway!

Interesting;

Women should not be concerned if a male should rub or bumps into them on a mass transit sys.
The mass transit sys has been my primary means of trans for over 30 years in Korea. I remember the bus girls on teh rule routes having to deal with harrasment from the males who were stumbling out of local mockley houses. I have also seen the way the males attempt to show aggresive behavior towards the females. There were times during rush hour where the cars were packed and I had a clear perimeter of a couple feet. This was while others were packed in they were packed in so tight their oxygen supply was limited. I also see the drunks on the subway who continue to harass the females. I go out of my way to ensure the female is protected against these obnoxious individuals. The reason many are sporting the backpacks is to prevent this accidental bumping.

Therefore, Women take a stand. If you feel it was intentional make sure you let others in the area know of your objections. You do not have to take it.

Right on, Hiker! The ladies will appreciate your support! We should all be like you, and do our best to help the ladies out. The drunks can often be a thoughtless lot. Just try to move away rather than hit and slap and make it worse, that was what I was trying to say.

Hello, Mr. Joe

Sometimes I read your posts here and everytime
I read some of yours relate to Korean things such as tradition, culture and
something like that, I was surprised. Since you know and understand so much about Korea, maybe more than Korean young generation.. I guess. :]

Just wondering how you could get those information or where..

Have a great weekend!!

Talking Thanks, Sunja!

[I have replied separately in a message with more details for you.]

I admit to being older than most folks on this Forum, and therefore I have had more time to learn and study about Korea. So maybe I am able to sort of clarify happenings in Korea in such a way that Foreigners can understand. I hope so.
American culture has evolved much differently than Asian culture. We (most Americans) are generally ignorant of other cultures. We tend to think that if others do not do it "Our Way" that it is WRONG!!! What an unfortunate thing that is. Laugh when Americans try chopsticks for the first time! Laugh when they can't bend down far enough to sit on the floor, and if they do get down, can't get up again! We all need to lighten up and follow the golden rule, which applies to all people. Respect-learn-smile-enjoy life!

I don't think women should just take it and move silently away. There are good reasons why those gropers do it on crowded subways. Their victims can't get away and they aren't likely to get called on their sh*t. Women should yell, perhaps even hit them. I think the word to shout in korean is ???? (manjijima).

If I'm wrong, someone please correct my Korean.

Joe;

Laugh when they can't bend down far enough to sit on the floor, and if they do get down, can't get up again!

This is another culture change from years past. The Koreans have became accustomed to sitting on furniture these days. The majority, especially the younger ones, also experience problems sitting on the floor these days.

I have to concur with your statement concerning the total disregard for other cultures. It is a shame that these individuals are missing so much in life.
