Let's backtrack a little to Spring 1942 which is really when the US stepped into the foray (and even then, they took almost 2 years to fully mobilize) the UK was on its heels when the US entered the fight. The Africa and Southeast Asia campaigns were going badly for the UK and German bombings were taking a toll on the military industrial complex in England. It was American logistical support of England that kept it afloat until the US was able to get it's act together. Years of economic depression and downsizing after WW I had decimated the American military. Macarthur even ranked the US Army 16th after Portugal (ha).
To tell the truth, WW II was an ALLIED effort. No country lost more troops than the Soviet Union. Their casualty figures are horrendous. Credit has to be given to all the allied nations. To say the British were the ones to save the US and the Russians is historically inaccurate. It's quite the other way around. In fact, if it weren't for Chamberlain, it's possible Hitler could have been contained earlier.
