Teenage Prostitute Problems in Pusan

I was scanning the blogs and noticed this topic on GIKorea.net. The statistics aren't good!

Quote:
About 20 percent of teenage prostitutes in the southeastern port city of Pusan began working in the industry when they were under 14 just for money, according to a survey.

The Pusan Metropolitan Police Agency Friday released the survey of 85 teenagers and 157 men who were caught engaging in the sex trade in the city last year.

Police said that 44.7 percent of the underage prostitutes sold sex to make money to cover entertainment costs like social gatherings.

About 31, or 36 percent of them said they sold sex for a living, indicating their motivation in turning to prostitution.
Ok, so almost half of the under-age girls are turning to prestitution because they have entertainment bills or parties? That is crazy!

prostitution is everywhere so not really suprised by this article, but 14 yr olds is waaaaay too young though other people might not agree like R.kelly (if it has grass on the field then play ball). i admit i had sex with a 14 yr old when I was 14 yr old but a 14 yr old with an ah jeh shee.... thats wrong. though i have to admit some 14 yr olds i've see now n days don't look like 14 yr old at all...

It's a very sad truth, and it has been going on for quite a while.
I've watched several Korean special documentaries on this subject over the years. It's pretty sick. The little girls are so fargone to the point where they don't even realize what they are doing is sick; they just talk about it like it's nothing at all (like it's normal). Their reasons are so unbelievable... "so they can hang (keep up) with rich friends; pay for stuff", "because their parents don't give them enough allowance". Some of these girls aren't even from poor families, either.

Since I am still experiencing problems with the dates the browser is showing I will have to assume this is more recent than Sep 05.

As far as Busan and the prostitiution issue. I am not sure how many have actually been to Busan. The area across from the train station is used to be referred to as Texas street. There is also another area further down called Green street. In the 70's - 80's this area was frequented by US personnel. Several clients were coming off the ships that docked in the area. The rest from other military stationed in the area. On a visit to the area a few years ago I noticed it had evolved into a little Minsk. The majority of the retailers in the area also spoke Russian. The US population had moved on. I did not frequent the area. This was one of the most sleaze areas I had ever seen in Korea. Not that I had visited many :-)

As for the age of these kids. I am not sure if anyone is familiar with the problem in the US. The investigative show MSNBC has conducted at least 3 sting operations. They rent a house and have police waiting outside once they are captured on the camera. They have adults posing as teens 12-13 yo. They have actually had one individual who was told to strip in the garage and come inside. These individuals have ranged in age from 21 to 78 and it various sexual preferences. They also had very diverse careers. Some were individuals of public trust; Rabbi, School Teachers, Fed Cop and hard core criminals. Could one of these individuals taken a life if it was not a sting operation? I would have to say definetly. One Einstien had seen the show, drove by and seen one individual being cuffed and stuffed and still went in. A couple years ago the 2ID Mueseum Curator was also apprehended for the same offense. I believe this has to be an illness that these individuals have. What reasonable person would have arranged to meet a 13 yo girl and fly 7k miles to meet her?

While teaching adult computer classes in the evenings I use to include in my Safety statments 1. Computers can be addicitive, 2. Know what your children are doing on line. I believe there is a correlation between the two. We need watch the teens to ensure they are not inviting those that have the addicition to feed.

Going on quite a while?

Stuff happens. Going on " quite a while"? Yep. Since "God saw that man needed a helper, and He made woman." (Genesis)
A lot of "begatting" has gone on since then...
Teens hanging around a Port City? Yep. Train stations? Yep!
To those of us who have led what I call a sheltered life, surrounded by a fairly moral society and growing up in Christian and Jewish homes in other countries, I can understand your shock. Don't be. And don't spend a lot of time worrying if you can fix it. You can't. Just move on to the next block and it will be out of sight. Maybe you can help with poverty or hunger... If you have extra time and energy, find a beneficial organization or church and volunteer!

I'm not speaking of human trafficking here, where women and children are forced into an unsavory alliance or enslaved by mobsters. That is another subject. The above refers to volunteer teens making money by sexual favors.

Human Trafficking in Korea? I would not think this would happen in the Land Of The Morning Calm

BTW; Remember the sunrise in the AM in Korea? I use to work in the mountains and had the opportunity to enjoy watching the sun rising and setting. The area around Daechon was an awesome site then. The Land Of The Morning Calm was a common phrase. I have not heard it since returning.
