shsong21,
That is not prejudice. He has "things I like about Korea" and "things I hate about Korea" all on the same page. We have already posted both subjects on this forum remember? He is not bashing Koreans, but showing some of the things he feels are bad about Korea. Let's take a look at the first one. Wreckless mopeds Who hasn't almost been run over by a moped on a walking area? I know in Songtan Koreans ride on pedestrian only areas! Again he is simply pointing out what he dislikes. If you read his blog you will see he points out the good with the bad. Mike

I think I can understand shsong21's point of view. The pics and layout of the website does tend to glorify and promote bad images of Korea. The first thing I saw was "Thing I do not like..." and then straight the pictures; hardly paid any attention to the 'disclaimer' part of "...not to be taken as Anti-Korean."
I'm sure if Korean person came to our forum and posted "Thing I hate about the US", some of us probably won't be too happy (first impression) even though he or she puts "what I like..." and a disclaimer saying "I'm not anti-American". By the way, BIGD, that's an awesome avatar!!! (w/Hyo Lee) |

shsong21--look at it this way. I live in Washington, DC, in the US. There are plenty of things I don't like about living here--the traffic, the crime, the over-politicization of everything, etc...
it's as important to recognize the things that could be better as to celebrate the good things, if we are to improve our circumstances. There were things about Korea that bothered me when I lived there in the 1970s, but years later, all I remember were the good things--the hospitality, the ingenuity of the people (as Hiker mentioned in another thread), the fantastic food, the temples and palaces, the mountains.... Oh yeah, one good thing about the Washington area--there are hundreds of Korean restaurants and markets all over the place! the neighborhood I live in (actually in Virginia, called Annandale) is often called Little Seoul. It's cool. |

I have seen that site before. I hope you will also notice that the person listed what he likes about Korea as well.
I would not take it too personally. Americans may criticize their own hometowns even if they truly love them. For many Americans, pointing out the things that they think should be improved is how you show you care about something. |
