I can't believe Koreans are making news of this. Alarming?

There were 4 new AIDS cases among teens aged 15 to 17 in Korea last year. The total number of teens who became infected with the virus last year stood at 16, a sharp increase from the last year's 11 teenage AIDS patients.

Only 16? That is extremely low for any country!

According to a report by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) on Monday, 680 people were newly diagnosed with AIDS last year, which means that 1.86 people a day contracted AIDS. The number of AIDS patients is steadily on the rise starting at 219 in 2000, then 398 in 2002, 534 in 2003, and 614 in 2004. The number of those diagnosed with AIDS since 1985 was no less than 3,829, among whom 721 have died.

That is outstanding! Less than 700 total people infected in all of South Korea. That is amazing compared to the rest of the world. The only negative I found was that most of the infected got AIDS through blood transfusions.

Among the 680 who developed AIDS last year, 477 were identified as patients whose infection course was traced. All of them except a woman who contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion were found to have been infected with the deadly disease through sexual contact.

Seems if Koreans get better blood screening techniques they can cut their AIDS rate even further.
