U.S. Report: N.Korea Will Takeover S.Korea on 216th Day

Interesting report. I am not sure this is any big news. It has always been common knowledge that South Korea could not survive an invasion without eventual support from other countries.

Quote:
A once-classified U.S. document on Pacific Command in 1975 is now public and according to an assessment back then North Korea would have taken over South Korea seven months after its initial attack if Seoul didn't get help from outside the country.

North Korea's invasion of South Korea in the 1970's would have resulted in the defeat of Seoul in 216 days if South Korea had no additional assistance aside from the United States forces already in the country. This is according to a 1974 classified assessment by U.S. Commander in Chief Pacific based on war games.

This revelation came courtesy of the Nautilus Institute, a U.S. non-profit that specializes in Northeast Asia's security issues which put on its Web site a recently declassified 800-page report by the Pacific Command.

The report states the existence of "nuclear armed U.S. missile and artillery batteries" in South Korea in 1975 and their possible use as a deterrent against an invasion by the communist country. Also, it contains comments by then secretary of defense James Schlesinger on the tactical use of nuclear weapons in the Korean Peninsula.

However the report also notes views from intelligence in which it says that although North Korea was capable of initiating a major attack against the South without support from Russia, the North wouldn't be able to sustain operations for more than 90 days.

The detailed model based on war games predicted that with South Korea's current military resources including one U.S. Army Division and 54 U.S. fighter aircraft the country would be able to prevent the capture of its capital, Seoul, during the first 90 days. However the simulation concluded that if South Korea received no outside assistance North Korea would prevail, eventually defeating the South on the 216th day.

That is pretty interesting. So Korea and the US were vulnerable in the 70's.

I wonder how the odds are now.
I also wonder...if DPRK soldiers invaded, would a good number of them be out to kill or surrender and request asylum?

The real "Shock and Awe" will be when every North Korean soldiers stops to eat at McDonalds and KFC. Can you imagine heading south and getting to the first South Korean town? All the little eating stands and burger joints will become their focus! They will be amazed at the wealth and available food.
