Do Koreans sleep on subways more than anyone else?

I have really only used the Korean subway/train system, so I have little to compare with!

When I traveled on the Korea train system I typically noticed that more than half the Koreans on the train were sleeping. Some how they always woke up before their stop! I was always amazed by that.

I can only come to the conclusion that they either work or study very hard and take the opportunity to get some rest. They also must feel very safe and secure.

Do Koreans sleep more than other people on trains?

I find that amazing, too, how Koreans sleep all through the ride and some how just wake up right when they reach their stop. It's like that on buses, too.

I think it's true that Koreans are very exhausted...and some naturally just begin to doze off like babies when riding in planes, trains, cars, etc. I don't think most of them are actually "sleeping", though. They are just dozing off until they hear the announcement they have reached their stop. Also, I believe some just keep their eyes closed because they do not want to make eye contact with others (since in a crowded train, everyone's all up in each others' faces). Of course, there are some who are just rude and don't want to yield their seats to the elderly.

The only other subway system I've been on was in New York and Hong Kong. No one really dozes off in Hong Kong (but some do) since the subway system is so small there compared to here, so the maximum you can ride a train is like...a half hour(?). As for the ones in New York...it's too scary to fall asleep there. You either get mugged or end up in the wrong neighborhood!

It's hard to say Koreans sleep more on trains than anywhere else, though. There are a lot of countries who use subway transit like Japan. From what I've heard, the conditions there are identical to here from the dozing off to the stuffing/squishing of people during rush hour.

Shsong21, do you take the subway to work? Or drive a car? Walk?

Mike
