The Seoul Times is reporting that "Nicholas Cheong Jin-Suk, archbishop of Seoul diocese, was officially appointed as cardinal by the Vatican on Feb. 22, 2006, Catholic Bishops's Conference of Korea announced on the day."
Quote:
Nicholas Cheong is one of the 15 cardinals appointed by Pope Venedicto XVI. They included Catholic priests from the US, Hong Kong, the Philippines, France, and Venezuela.
They will officially begin their cardinalship in an inauguration ceremony on Feb. 24, 2006.
With his appointment South Korea now has two cardinals at the same time in 36 years. In 1969 Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, now 83, was appointed by Pope Paul IV as the sole Korean cardinal.

I find it very interesting how fast South Korea has accepted the Church into the country. At night, from any city in Korea, you can see dozens of crucifixes lighting up the skyline.
