Youngest Son Korea bound
Looks like he will be going active duty from his Army reserve Unit. I think he will be in one of the Maint Units either at Humphery or Eagle. He will know by the end of the week. There is not a lot of information on the web about Eagle and as he is 1/4 Korean I was wondering if Koreans still treat Mixed Blood Koreans like they did in the 70's. You can leave a message here or on my blog. Old Army's Blog

One of my troops was Korean/American. His Korean was excellent, but was not exact. From what I understood he was treated very well by the Koreans. I noticed he had a new Korean girlfriend almost monthly. He dressed 100% like an American and you could tell he was not local.

Have no fear, Dad! The most famous actor on Korean TV speaks almost no Korean and was raised in the US. The girls go nuts over him. Who cares what the boys think?

Well, I would not say my youngest is movie star material. I was amazed that he decided to go to Korea as he has neve showed any interest in the language or the culture. The only thing he asked me is if they had a gym as he is big into working out. He is still fighting to get released by his reserve unit so he can process at the MEPS to see if he can go and keep his current skill as a machinist. He just finished a year in Iraq back in December as he was cross leveled in his job to a unit here in Texas. From what I have observed the reserve units only take care of the ones from their orginal unit as far as promotion or anything else and the unit he is with in Oklahoma has still not processed his travel pay and it is going on 3 months. I am sure he will enjoy his tour.
PS he is a 44E sorry I did not include that. He also asked why noinfo on the Bars at Camp Humpherys and only Osan? He has a friend in the Air Force, who may be going to Korea also. Last edited by Parisok : 03-14-2006 at 08:54 AM. |

He might be in for a disappointment as a 44E. There is very few that actually work as a machnist. This job is primarly performed by civilian employees. I am not sure these days since I have been away from the maint field for a while. I had a difficult time keeping them employed and usually cross trained them as welders or mechanics. As they say an idle mind is the devil's play ground. If you do not keep solders busy they will find trouble.
I am sure he probably stayed busy in Iraq especially outfitting the hummers with armor plating. |

He did a lot of welding in Iraq as well. Time in Korea will give him time to contemplate what he really wants to do.

Well Looks like the youngest is actually going.
He has been released from his Reserve Unit and will be going to Fort Leonard Wood for 10 days then on to either Camp Humphreys or Youngsan. He has never expressed any interest in anything Korean other than his mom's cooking. He seems pretty excited to go. How is life in the Army in Korea now I have been retired for 11 years and have not been to Korea since Reagan was President. There was not even a subway from Seoul to anywhere. He loves music rap and rock if anyone has some urls I can give him when he comes to visit. Thanks Mike |

As a single E-4 I think he will be all right he has some wild notion that he can take his honda over there. I am discouraging that as he will have a room on the base and public transportation will get him around. My wifes half sister is not far from Seoul so he may get to meet her as I never have.
