I do not believe he will be able to take his Honda (car /motor bike) All soldiers E-7 and below are prohibited from having a POV. This came about a few years ago when the DUI's were out of control and at least one fatality occured.

Public trans is excellent. I believe they also have post shuttles in CH that run almost hourly. They also have an excellent train that will put anything in the US to shame. It runs from Seoul to Daegu in 1:30 minutes. I believe it is a 20 minute trip to Seoul. There is a bus that runs from CH to Yongsan also. A word of caution while traveling on Friday afternoon between CH and Seoul, DON'T unless he does not mind traffic. He will be on the bus and it will not be too bad. I have been on the road between Osan and Seoul where it has taken 3 hours on more than one occasion. There is also the DHL where your son can take a weekend to stay with some friends. I would guess a room is probably $50 a night. It is based on his rank. Maybe someone can provide more details and pricing.

http://english.seoul.go.kr/residents...04sub_01.html# << here is a great subway map for seoul, there links to other maps on the page as well. i've found it very useful myself

my suggestion is always take a bus to the subway station in Pyoungteak and then go to seoul from there... takes awile but its not bad... getting back is a little more annoying but still not bad

there bus runs around base every 30min, and a kind person will normally offer a ride, plus there is always the taxi

Wow, Hiker! You hold the record...three hours from Seoul to Osan? I bet one can walk there in that time. My record was like 2 hr 15 min on a Saturday afternoon. Get this...it's only about a 40-mile drive! When I lived in So Cal, it'd be like, "Cool! I'll be there in 20 minutes!"

The trip to Seoul and staying at Dragon Hill Lodge is a great idea, especially now. Not exactly sure about DHL room prices, but I hear its dirt cheap these days because they have so many vacancies. I hear DHL employees are even..."spamming" military units all over Korea by phone advertising and asking them to check out a room. Though, I wonder if that is legal...AR 25-2 regulations clearly state you cannot use DSN lines for advertising. Someone wanna call this in to the legal office?

I have noticed many E-4s and below buying cars. It seems you can get a waiver at Camp Humphreys. Same goes for moving off base.

I think the public transportation will be just fine. I never needed a car on either of my tours in Korea but did find it handy in Italy. Thanks to every one for your greats comments.

i really really doubt he'll be stopping in Hawaii. i'm guessing hes taking a normal plane (not military?)

My experence have been, NYC, Tokyo, Inchon. Inchon, SFO, seattle. SFO Inchon, Inchon, Tokyo, Chicogo, MSP (oh god that one was tiring. running from plane to plane kills you... -.-)

i do know Korean airlines goes though alaska (ya i don't get it either)

so ya... maybe one containtal stop in the US plus Tokyo at max.

good luck to your Son! i hope he has a laptop with lots of batteries because its very boring
