Korea Moves To Ease Gay Military Restrictions

In preperation for Brokeback Mountain, South Korea has eased restrictions on gays in the military. From the ever popular website, 365gay.com:

Quote:
The South Korean government has announced plans to overhaul military law that provides for the imprisonment and firing of gay soldiers.

Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung told Parliament on Tuesday that the changes will reflect the recommendations of a human rights report in January that called for an end to the ban on gays serving in the military.

But he would not go so far as to announce the abolishment of the ban.

Instead, a blue ribbon panel will be formed to determine just how far the changes should go. The panel will include the minister of justice and military leaders.

South Korea began easing restrictions on gays in the military last week when the government ended forced medical examinations on gay soldiers, and stopped placing a notation on their official discharge papers saying they were released from the military because of mental illness.

Under the new regulations which began April 1 it is an offense to subject gay officers to physical harassment.

Nevertheless, under the military penal code, soldiers who engage in gay sex face imprisonment of up to one year.

Overturning the law, and allowing gays to serve openly in the armed forces, are opposed by South Korea's top generals.

Well, I think that the Korean military should just adopt the whole, "Don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) policy. I too would oppose an openly gay military. DADT should be applied to heterosexuals as well. I personally do not want to be ask or tell anyone what I do in personal with my wife. Nore do I wish to know about anyone else. I do not think it is condusive to moral to have open sexual preferences in the military, especially on some close quartered assigments such as a deployment, etc. It would be unpracticle and impossible to ban homosexuals from the military and I think that the DADT policy is an idea that Korea should take into consideration.
