Should Korea send troops to Lebanon?

It looks like South Korea is seriously considering sending troops to Southern Lebanon. There is too be a UN force of 15,000 and South Korea has been asked by the UN to contribute troops.

Part of me thinks it would be good for some Asian countries to send some troops. South Korea, China and Japan have mostly non-Muslim, Christian and Jewish populations. While South Korea has a large Christian population, I think they could send an impartial force.

The other part of me thinks that South Korea remembers the last time the sent troops to Iraq and had Kim Sun-il beheaded. Also, part of me would like to see the French, Italy and other European nations step-up.

France has an Army??? I think that the European Union members should all participate but they are only looking for something that is only a positive for them and nothing that has any possible risk to it.

Re: Should Korea send troops to Lebanon?

I think it's a great idea, and it would definitely keep things more impartial if the force was made up of mostly asian country troops. I think the worst thing we could do, though, is send in US troops there. The entire rest of the middle east thinks that we hate Lebanon, so the perception would end up creating a bad reality.

Re: Should Korea send troops to Lebanon?

I agrees with joeinpo, the US should not have a presence there. We really have enough to stay busy and with the cost involved stay out of it. OTH we all know that won't happen.

Re: Should Korea send troops to Lebanon?

President Bush had said at the outset that there would be no U.S. troops involved. The French had agreed, verbally, with Sec. of State Rice, to send several thousand troops there. Now that the cease fire is in place, they are only sending a few hundred. go figure. The french betray us again. I personaly think the ROK should not send troops for this effort. We should let what ever happens happen and watch Israel launch a full scale attack instead of holding back like they did this time. Anything else will just delay the inevitible and let hezbullah get stronger. The Arabs, and one of our supposed best mid east allies, Qatar, are all now behind hezbullah. This is now being hailed as a great victory against Israel and the west on all arab streets.

I think it would be in the U.S.'s best interest NOT to send any troops as well.

Yep. They did this with the war against Iraq. I remember Colin Powell stating that the French verbally agreed to support us on the vote and the next day voted against us. They have no problem sending troops into Algeria or the Ivory Coast though.

I don't think the U.S. should ever forget how the French helped us against the British. even then they were an opportunist, only helping us when George Washington actually won a battle. Our country should always be grateful, but it is hard when you have so many false promises in the recent past.

Re: Should Korea send troops to Lebanon?

My opinion is Yes.
Any way the politicians will decided the issues.
I think, the korean troops could be helpful to Lebanese.
Because the korean troops have a different cultures from both Lebanon & Israel's, it maybe possible to be impartial. Also ROK has no relationship and stake in both nations.

Re: Should Korea send troops to Lebanon?

I see a no- win situation in Lebanon. Hezbollah has already got the quasi-Lebanese leadership under their control. "Helping" underdogs attempt to win against the Muslim Majority may be very patriotic, but would only be a waste of time. Let freedom ring elsewhere.
Koreans need continuous training, but let them do it closer home, under real leadership. The U.N. is UN-leadership! Koffee Annon is going to Iran soon. Hope he stays there.
