24 surgeries to gain some confidence?

Before he was done, Park Hyo-jung had 24 procedures on his body in a little more than three years to improve his appearance. He had repeat surgeries after injury, added dimples to his cheeks, removed blemishes and chest hair, transformed a droopy face into a studly visage.
"Before I didn't have a girlfriend. I didn't want to even try because I didn't have confidence," said the 24-year-old, a technician at a medical supply company and part-time student.

It looks like a growing trend in South Korea.

Is this an effect of western influence? It is a shame that even the South Korea society is getting so superficial.

I don't think it's the "Western" influence that makes many Korean males go through all that surgery. I think it's Korean culture itself. Looks do count in all cultures, but in Korea it is totally in-your-face and straight forward. If you're ugly they won't hire you; plain and simple. No one can be sued for anything. That's why you have pretty girls and handsome boys working out in public and the ugly ones in some factory or basement where no one sees them. Due to this mentality, people would do whatever it takes.
