Tipping in South Korea: bad or good thing?

I generally only tip at one place that I visit near Osan Air Base. It is a local Korea place that I visit a lot. They generally appreciate it, but I read this on a travel site:

Quote:
Tipping is not necessary in Korean restaurants. Especially in small restaurants, they might feel disrespected by you giving them money. At hotels and very high-class restaurants, you should feel free to tip. Otherwise, tipping can lead to misunderstanding even at family restaurants such as Bennigan's, Outback Steakhouse, and TGI Friday's.

I don't tip as I get away from the American bases. Many places near American installations have tip jars. I guess the further away you get from the American bases, the less you will see tipping.

When i was in Pusan, i was with alot of Koreans working for Korean Airlines and a few native born Korean Army frineds. I went to leave a tip at a small place and they said it was like an insult to leave tip.

In Bundang, at least near the Sunae area, a lot of restaurants are starting to charge "tax" and addtional fees. It's sort of a trend in that area.

Guess how much of that actually goes to the gov't. I bet none.

The trend here in the States is to add the "gratutity" to the bill. It is usually written on the menu in small print and if you leave a tip you are not told that it is included. It use to be they just did it for large groups but now it is becoming a more common accurence.
