A fire set by a drunken man Monday destroyed part of the 18th-century Hwaseong Fortress, a World Cultural Heritage site near Seoul, South Korea.
The fire destroyed the upper floor of the two-story wooden pavilion before it was extinguished 20 minutes later, the Korea Herald reported Tuesday.
The arson suspect was reportedly intoxicated and started the blaze by setting his clothes on fire using a cigarette lighter and throwing them onto the second floor of the wooden structure.
The 24-year-old man was standing in front of the building watching it burn when police arrested him. The suspect told police he was troubled by debts.
Hwaseong Fortress is one of Korea's finest surviving remnants of the Joseon era. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 after the building was restored following a fire in the summer of 1996.
