Well, racism exists in every country, but I have heard people say that they have run into less problems with it in Canada. On the English Spectrum website a couple of gyopos said that when they moved to Australia and New Zealand they had many problems with racism. They said that America was a little better, and that Canada was even better. But, these are just two people's stories.
We have a lot of immigrants in Canada, and I think many of our immigration laws are more relaxed than in America. For example, a Korean person can stay in Canada for 6 months as a tourist, and Canadians can also stay in Korea for 6 months. Often, Canadians like to think of themselves as being much less racist than Americans and that they live in a harmonious multicultural country. But, in reality, Canadians and Americans aren't very different from each other. Canada is a good country, but of course there are problems. Racism exists everywhere. |

1. I am sure President Roh is not fluent in English, as Shsong says. But I disagree that there is any need for that. The leader of Afghanistan speaks good English. So What? Presidents and other diplomats have very qualified interpreters that do the translating. The Leaders' jobs are to lead, not speak Chinese, (The most spoken language) or English.
2. There should be no shame or loss of face involved in not speaking a foreign language! Koreans and Japanese kill themselves rather than lose face. Students that fail college (I mean University in Korea) (College is not prestigious here) often kill themselves in shame. Get over that idea. Get up and move on to other things. 3. If qualifications to be a good leader included speaking English (or Chinese) a lot of countries would still be under British rule! discuss. |
