Not responsible for his actions? Was not cognizant of what he was doing? I have seen and heard it all before. I do believe in most cases checkbook maint is not taught in schools. This should be a mandated topic for all students. I know of one student who won top honors in math and completed AP calculus as a Junior; however, did not have a clue on checkbook maint. This Marine knew what he was doing; however, was unable to escape the rush of passing bad checks.

I agree. Teaching kids how to balance a check book is neglected in most schools.

I never liked checks but part of my home eccomics class that everyone had to take in like grade 7 or 8 (can't fully remember) was how to write a check and manage check book, i actually had checks when i had a paper root because i needed them to pay the bill to the paper

I would ask him if he knew the exact amount of $ he had in his account. Followed by if he knew the policy regarding bad check writing? A little self-help here would of kept him out of trouble. I never learned it in school, but my mother and grandmother would role play writing checks and balancing the account with checks from their closed accounts. Nice to have a back that changes its name every 3-4 years. I had several addicts over 35 y/o who never learned that skill either.
