Re: Official word on VoIP in Korea
Hi, I not affilliated with USFK at all, but I would still like to offer my two cents. If you want to pick up service before the June 7th deadline, then you might consider going here: http://www.sipphone.com/ This company offers software based VoIP service sort of like Skype, but they use an open standard known as SIP. This means you can go out and buy any phone that supports SIP from linksys or dlink or ipdialog (the phone I use here in Korea). I have a local phone number in the US, Hong Kong and when I'm away it all automatically forwards to my Korean cell phone. If your friends and family are anywhere as lazy and cheap as mine. =) You can remove all roadblocks by giving them local numbers to dial you here in Korea with VoIP.
I don't work for any of the companies mentioned, but I really enjoy the service and so far I haven't had any trouble. The phone I use is a used one my friend gave me from http://www.ipdialog.com/ which is where *HE* works. So I can't really comment on how much those phones cost and as far as the sipphone.com service I don't really know how that compares to vonage. Since it's not vonage and uses open protocols however, it's very likey no one on base could ever detect that you're using these phones (meaning even after the June 7th deadline). I've also traveled with my phone and just plugged it into the hotel ethernet jack and was up and running. Anyway, if anyone wants further info... you can find me on here. Cheers!
