The price of honey

Does anyone know why honey is so expensive here? And is it worth it - should I buy local honey rather than the stuff at the commisary?

Re: The price of honey

Everything is more expensive here. Be sure to check ALL expiration dates. Sometimes the commisary has stuff on the shelves that expires that day or the day before. Also, I know of a few people (including myself) who've had their milk come out of the carton curdled before the expiration date. I'm not sure why but I watch closely when pouring it

I used to work in the grocery distribution business and we called it Cold Chain Compliance. Basically insuring product remains at the correct temp through out it's distribution process. I have a sneaky suspicion that what ever distribution system Deca has set up for it's commissaries, they're not meeting the CCC 100% of the time. That's my theory anyway.

I have had that problem a couple times too. Also I have noticed recently that the whole milk is like two days away from expiring, why is that? It must be sitting back there a long time since that stuff is good for like a month.

If I'm not mistaken, it's flown in from the US frozen. If it's unthawing and then sitting out warm long enough for it to curdle - there is something seriously wrong with the CCC.

Back in the '80s, you could only buy milk at the commissary that had been reconstituted with coconut oil. It tasted terrible!

Re: The price of honey

I used to work for DECA and I can tell you honey is a high profile black market item in certain sizes. I remember that coconut oil from the 80's. It was terrible.

Cool Re: The price of honey/ milk/etc.

I see an ad that tells that the bakery at Camp Market is licensed to make different brands of bread, etc. I don't know if the Army still has a milk plant in Seoul as they did years ago or not. It would be interesting if we knew.

I see Korean TV news investigated their grocery stores and found the temperatures too high on some coolers for milk, etc. I'm thrilled to see that someone is checking now, and hopeful that some sort of enforcement ensues, rather than the old payoff and look the other way deal. I know a person who got sick recently on some local tofu from outside...

Re: The price of honey

I remember when I worked in the commissary and ultra-pasturized milk first starting showing up in Korea, sales of the USFK coconut milk dropped. I don't think they make the milk anymore or it would be in the shopettes or commissaries. They also used to make ice cream from that nasty tasting stuff.

Re: The price of honey

Anyone know if it's illegal to bring your own honey in to Korea from somewhere else (thailand in this case). I make a trip to Thailand about 3 times a year for business and usually I pick the stuff up there. Never thought about it until reading this thread. It's easy to get about everywhere else in the world and in many different styles and sizes.
