Let me get in the middle of this discussion. India is MUCH larger and diverse than Korea, and the people travel thousands of miles to the large cities for business and jobs. Many MUST know more languages to prosper. Dialects also are diverse. India is the second most populous country.
Korea is MUCH smaller than India. The area is similar to the U.S. state of Indiana. A Short History Lesson - Until the Japanese conquered Korea in 1910 it was basically an agricultural land, with one language spoken throughout. The Japanese, in 1930, forbade the use of Korea's language! The flag was replaced with the Japanese flag. The whole country was forced to speak only Japanese. For many years Japanese was the only language allowed in schools! Koreans became subject to mistreatment, and were used in blue-collar jobs by the Japanese, They were forbidden to be a part of the governing force. No Korean was allowed to even drive the trains. When The Japanese left, Korea immediately began teaching Korean again in the schools. The government had to be completely reconstructed. It was a difficult time. Older Koreans can still speak Japanese, but they would rather forget it. The Japanese ruling period was not a pleasant time for Koreans. Soon afterward the Korean War came, and again many schools were closed and used for Military Headquarters, etc. So we must know these things to appreciate the reasons Korea can be EXTREMELY proud to be among the top ten economically successful nations in the world! I believe the government is now taking positive steps to include English as a requirement in high school. Soon they will have increased Chinese classes too. It is not by choice, but by circumstance, that Koreans generally speak one language. That is improving every day. |

Re: Volunteers Required to teach to International Kids
You are correct! Soldiers, wives, mothers -please read!
I know just practicing English conversation will be welcome, and actually teaching English may be a plus, but not a requirement, Am I correct? The need is for Native English Speakers, not necessarily polished public speakers or degreed teachers. A great chance for those who have free time to help and enjoy working with others for the improvement of the world and fostering friendship with the children who will have the responsibility of continuing to make it a better world! Where else have you seen an opportunity to bring your children and let them also become good-will ambassadors? And meet a Yoga instructor, also! Please call - Bala 010-2379-2006 |
