KOREAN SUBWAY (small seats, too hot)
Hello all,
I'd like to make thread about korean subway. I belive you may have experinced difficulties due to a couple of reasons while being on the train. I hope I can share my own experiences with other members regarding TEMPERATURE, JAMMING issues using public transportation. First of all, I feel very hot and super jammed like sardines during peak hours. I'm communting on the subway early every morning to my office. I'm in Seoul. I have to prepare mentally, since I do care about space issues and being personal. It's getting on my nerves a lot. Second of all, I just felt that it is way too HOT inside as far as temperature is concerned. This is the biggest issue for me wherever I go. I get easily irritated by hot temperatures. The majority of Koreans are small ..so this is part of the reason. Being a 235 pounder (mutated Korean myself) I feel very very hot on the subway or wherever I go. I have to wear short sleeves inside my jacket. A lot of perople are gawking at me when I take off my jacket. My friend told me I'm the only one who takes off my jacket. GIVE ME A BREAK. A lot of people still are sweating on the train due to wrong teperature setting. But Koreans do not take off their jackets. I'm a Korean . but Why is it? I assume they do care about CHE MYEON. CHE MYEON means that you do care about other people's view in terms of public behaviour. I've complained about temperature issue to the ministry of transportation, but have never seen any improvement. Is it just me? I've been traveling many times with different airlines. I think Korean airlines does not have a cold enough temperature setting standard. Lastly, I forgot to mention about seats. Many seats are designed to be too small. If I sit down there, I'm taking up too much space let's say 1.5 out of 1. OUCH.. Can anyone relate to my issues?

Re: KOREAN SUBWAY (small seats, too hot)
I cannot relate at all except for the crowds at rush hour. I was never hot on the train and I am just as big as you and even though the seats were a LITTLE bit on the small side I was usually just fine. I rode the subway several times per day, and I have to say that crowded busses are FAR worse than crowded subway trains.
You could try sitting in the very first car up against the wall., you will have more space there. |

I usually sit right next to the gate. I have founded BLUE LINE has poor internal air circulation systems. Has anyone felt the same thing? I was really fine with GREEN line though. (better air-circualtion) I've been driving my car before I come here, It's been a huge issue for me to control body temperature inside of the buidling due to overwheming heating systems. Otherwise, I'm really sweating like Whore in a church. During the rush hours, Heating system is on plus you will have jammed crowd on the subway. I've seen a lot of people sweating due to heavy duty cloth during the winter time. For me, I spend most of time in the office and rest of time for commuting on the subway. I decided not to wear heavy duty cloth for this reason.

Hey YOUNGBUCK,
You annoy the out of me. You killed this chat forum with your stupid posts. Honestly I think you are an American posing as a korean in here and laughing your ass off at jackasses that respond to you. Get the out of here while you have the chance. If you are really a Korean then what are you doing here? This forum is mostly older Army guys that could care less about your fake hip hop slang. Come clean...are you a foreigner posing as a korean or an actual Korean??? I won't believe you till I see you. What is your true motive in this forum??? You are a head. Prove yourself otherwise....Last edited by Mr. Joe : 03-05-2008 at 09:55 PM. |

Darn, I like your post. Be straight. I like straight shooter. Slap my face while looking into my eyes .I don't like people stabbing back at me. This is not how I do. You are toally entitle to your opinions and It's Ok to harrass me. This is a forum and I won't expect acceptance will come overnight. It is true I made dumb a$$ posts using urban languages. Well, Test me and harrass me. Casue I'm ready to roll. I won't get the Um~ out of here anyway . Hate it or love it. I'm real Let me answer your questions. I'm not a foreigner neither an american. I'm 100% korean who mixed up so much and still struggling to fight against all odds. It's just that I've lived in overseas and won't be able to look or act like typical korean guy. I wish I could. I've been to seoul for 9 months with my new office job. Everything is new to me including getting on a subway for commuting to the office daily. I was in Pusan to take care of my parents and came here for new opprotunities. I thought that It's good for me to live in big city.( deinfed by population) It's more easy to find open mineded people in Seoul i guess. My true motive is to contribute my knowledege about korean culture, so can other members could get beneftis from it. I don't know how could it be done? I might need to find out what they are interested in? what they want to know about? I'm not smart ...But I think I know my enough to share with others.There's always things to learn even from 5 year old boy. Well, I've made a few posts in language sections you like it or not.

Yeah, Biff, he is Korean, trying to find a way to fit in someway;
you may know how that feels! You guys may have a lot in common. Don't you want to meet him up on the hill, after he recovers from his surgery? We are in the general Korea forum, and it is still open for any comments... I think SSNAPIER is right... a group hug might do you good! |

Re: KOREAN SUBWAY (small seats, too hot)
I think the Biff comment was ridiculous and uncalled for... just my two cents. Anyway, I always ran the green line (both of them) and they were always a welcome ride because they were much cooler than the outside air. The seats fit me fine too and we are about the same size (I'm 6'4" / 220). The whole thing with people staring at you (you were talking about taking off your jacket), dude you've just got to let go of that angry feeling. What's offensive to me and my culture (people staring you down) is just life and the culture in Korea... people don't really mean any harm by it. I got stared at from day one 4 years ago until this day and these days I don't even notice it... I just gave up on caring about it and I felt a lot better. The only thing that still pisses me off is when people stare at my gf rudely (usually the old korean females disapproving of our relationship) or if someone says something stupid to her like "your boyfriend is a foreigner" as if she didn't already know that.
I however find that far and few between in Seoul... mostly when I arrived in Seoul I had a westerners mindset I guess you could say and I sort of perceived or understood situations in a negative light... when in reality they were not negative... more just neutral. My best advice to you is to not worry about people looking at you when you take your jacket off... leave for work a bit earlier (and maybe leave a bit earlier?) as to avoid the super high peak subway traffic and lighten up and embrace my favorite Korean pastime... SOCIAL DRINKING!! =) You'll be much happier and that's the most important thing to remember bro. Good luck. -Steve
