They have flights between Korea <---> Japan pretty much everyday.

And one of the nice things about only going to Japan - if the flight is going to the States - and it is scheduled to pick up people in Japan - they have to leave seats open for everyone they are picking up in Japan. So there are ALWAYS seats available on the Korea ---> Japan leg of those flights.

I am a retiree and I was living on a ninety day tourist visa for awhile. I used to do it all the time. One thing that is important is that you have lots of time on your hands. There is no guarantee you will get on the plane. I've seen active duty people spend a good portion of their leave in AMC terminals and call their units wanting a leave extension.

Re: Space A Hops

Last year I went to Japan from Osan. Big plane broke twice. Paid 3 nights in billeting. Finally got on a small plane to Yokuska because I only had one small bag. Took subway to Yokota in the rain. Arrived midnight. Rain and no taxis after midnight. Took 3 days to get a flight to Travis, after 3 attempts & walks in the rain at 3 am -got on, then later off of 3 broken planes. (Need to walk to Japanese visa office during duty hours to get out.) Don't fly during school vacation -kids have priority over retirees. Once was stuck in Hawaii for 7 days.
Active duty has priority, but you can eat up a lot of leave, even if you know of a flight scheduled. Fun if you have plenty of time. Coming back is usually easier. Carry a space A book and plenty of phone numbers.

Not unless something has changed. Retired military can, as long as it is for recreation, not for business.

Re: Space A Hops

I'm going to try and find a milk run route from the states to the ROK this summer. I have all the time in the world. If anyone has recent information on any milk runs leaving the states and how they route, or if there are any direct to the ROK, let me know, but don't post it here, shoot me an email. Thanks. Cheers!

Cool Re: Space A Hops

Good Luck! The important thing is to don't try it when school kids are traveling to and from. They go ahead of everything but Emergency Leave and Duty travelers.

Re: Space A Hops

When I was in Misawa, Japan (99-06), hops were fairly easy to get back to the states, especially on EML (Cat 2) leave. But I think they did away with the Patriot Express (aka Freedom Bird or rotator...contract commercial aircraft) so not sure what the availability is now. But definitely allow at least a week or two to get back and try not to travel during the summer break or holidays. If you know someone who works at the AMC counter, they can usually tell you how many seats are projected to be available for a given flight. Just remember that they have no control over who gets on the flight (they go by category and date/time of sign-up). I've been bumped off of a flight 15 minutes before boarding, and also gotten on a flight after boarding closed. Be nice to the AMC folks..remember they have a job to do just like everyone else and deal with frustrated people all day.
