All, came across this snake in a neighbors back yard. Does anyone know what kind it is and if its poisonous? I tried a couple of internet searches and couldn't find anything matching the description of the photo I took. Any help appreciated.

Re: Help in ID'ing Snake
I really cannot tell you if that one is poisonous.
What I can tell you is that you need to google "Venomous snakes in South Korea" not poisonous. Me not knowing the difference between poisonus and venomus can make the difference....Looks like we have 9 venomous snakes here in South Korea. Gloydius blomhoffi Gloydius saxatilis Gloydius ussuriensis Hydrophis cyanocinctus Hydrophis ornatus Mesobuthus martensii Pelamis platurus Rhabdophis tigrinus Vipera berus And yes, last year we had a person that was bitten by one of these venomous snakes right here in the ville of Humphreys. But I can say that in my 3 years of being here in Korea I have only seen 1 snake.....

Re: Help in ID'ing Snake
I found another site, Armed Forces Pest Management Board (www.afpmb.org), that has a listing for South Korea. Haven't acutally come across a picture or description of what I say, but I bookmarked it for future reference.
Chuck, this is the second snake I've seen over here. I saw one last year about this time at the old house I lived in. |

Re: Help in ID'ing Snake
Thanks gingersmurf. I went looking for it this morning and actually found it in my yard tucked in a bush. Can't have that with a little boy who is always outside so, I caught it and let it loose away from here. The more I looked at it in person, the more I thought it was some type of viper.

Re: Help in ID'ing Snake
It looks like one of the Colubridae family. The AFPMB shows the Rhabdophis tigrinus is present over here.
OK, now I'm really missing my Indigo for more than just his outgoing personality. |

I've narrowed it down to the Gloydius blomhoffi species, more specifically a Japanese Mamushi aka Asiatic Pitviper. I've attached an information sheet about it.

Re: Help in ID'ing Snake
What's throwing me for a loop is the solid dark grey on its back. I'm glad you got rid of it though!!
