Are Japanese women more liberal than Korean women?
There is an interesting discussion on Daum this weekend. Looks like some of the Koreans were discussing a few pictures of Japanese women. The pictures below show how it is somewhat common for Japanese women to show off their underwear and even go shopping in it. I need to visit Japan!
Ok, back on topic. Here is a statement made from the Seoul Times. Quote:

From what I observe it seems like both Korea and Japan tend to sort of follow little things from US/Europe and overexagerrate it (eventually twisting it into something we've never seen; thus, we end up saying "What the hell is that?).
Korea seems lag a little after Japan...they make sure it is a common practice in Japan before busting out so they can say, "If Japan can do it, we can do better". It's either that or Koreans, first, look down at it until a famous celebrity does it, which gives the approval that it's okay for the public to do it, too. So...my answer would be "yes", too. Japan will always be ahead of the game. |

On a deeper level, I think these girls are just looking for attention. I also bet these girls would say, "what are you staring at?"

Well, in the very short time I've spent in Japan, I think that Japan is just a much trendier place than Korea. I don't know if that equates to a more liberal culture overall. Plus, you tend to see a lot of crazy costumes and outrageous outfits in some of the younger, trendier areas of Japan that are meant to be shocking. I don't think that's necessarily the norm though. Young people in Korea seem nowhere near as stylish as their Japanese counterparts (and I'm not just talking about wearing their underwear in public).

Girls in Korea still wear pants underneath their dresses/skirts...
I think that the liberalism associated with low conservative Japanese women can be confused with the tradition in where the male is dominant and the female is only around to please him. This 'approach' has gone hand in hand, explained as the social standard and disguised to women as liberalism for centuries, and will be for centuries to come until the women there can recognize they aren’t really being liberal, rather, floating in a current caused by a backward tradition. In any case, I'm still a male, and I'm attracted to Japanese women. I like and dislike this at the same time. I can see Darwin's sexual selection theory at work here... if the whole world went in this direction it'd be a good way to weed out all the uglies (pretty harsh eh?). That in itself is a whole new discussion. The answer to your question: Yes, they're liberal in a sexual sense, and no, because that's the only sense they're liberal in.

All I have to say about that underwear shopping pic is that it is SWEET! The only other time I saw a girl shopping like this was in the states, but it was in Panama City FL during spring break...and the woman was a bit inebriated.
More liberal you ask? Japan produces a LOT of adult entertainment compared to Korea...Korea, relatively speaking, does not. I would say that the Japanese society, on a relative scale, is more accepting of it--this would include women. In my $0.02, this would make Japanese women more "liberal" as a collective group. Thoughts? cheers, ammo_bowlinsky |

Anyone know the origin or story behind those pics? I mean is it really common in Japan for girls to walk around like that anywhere?
Now that I think about it, I have seen Korean girls dress like that in Jeju-Do and the beach areas of Korea. I even seen a lot of Korean girls in Guam & Saipan walk everywhere like that, too. I know this girl in Korea who is (or appears as) the shy, conservative type (glasses, pony tail, long-sleeve shirt & pants, usually) and I remember running into her in Saipan last year...I did not recognize her because she was so...exposed, wearing a bikini and her hair all down. I felt so embarrassed to look her direction because all I could see were her... Last edited by eddiev9 : 12-28-2005 at 11:09 PM. |

I guess the ones who appear more conservative are confident and have nothing to prove as opposed to the ones who "strut their stuff"... On a side note, I like how this thread itself already has over 100 views!Last edited by eddiev9 : 12-29-2005 at 03:33 PM. |
