ESL Certificates

How and where would I go by getting one? I have been told by many foreigners and others that you do NOT need a degree to teach, but a certificate and a native english speaker. Can anyone give me some insight on the subject. TIA

Cool Re: ESL Certificates

Many ways. Google it, and ask your local Post Education Officer. They gave me a list at Yongsan, but I believe they don't teach ESL here presently.
I'm sure you know you can teach for free at a conversation class, and normally have no ESL requirement.
And I assume you know that you, the military member, cannot legally receive
compensation for any teaching while here on an A-3 Visa.
If you are asking for the wife, she can do as she pleases, but if she does eventually teach for compensation, legally she will have to change to a different visa. Things are changing in Korea. Most schools now require the 4 year degree.

absolutely, Mr.Joe is right.
And we will check it up to your school whether it is a real thing.

Re: ESL Certificates

I see, I am just waiving my options due to I am strongly thinking of doing my time and getting out. Only because my wife is getting tired of the late hours , past deployment, field excersizes, etc. and does not look forward to me going back to the states and being deployed again..So back on subject. I picked to come to Korea for the stability and due to my wife is Korean. We are having our 2nd girl next month. I am fortunate I have got command sponsored and a vehicle over here, rare being an E-5. So, I see alot of Expats over here that come here not to teach english but to do other jobs that I dont knwo of....if it was feasable I would try to land a GS job here but who knows..gotta do my research

that is not true. You can get TWO visa's. One fore teaching along with your A-3. They started to do that for Dependents over here. You can also get a part time job off post as long as you get written permission from your commander and it doesn't effect you duties.

Cool Re: ESL Certificates

Good to know! Thanks Doc, for the information! Two visas!
Do you, perchance, have any informative website you can share with us?
It only makes sense that they eased some of the useless restrictons. The original problem, I was told, was that GI's and or spouses were working but not paying the proper taxes required. Got to render to Caesar what is Caesar's...

I'll have to learn more about the visa situation. I found one very informative site here: http://www.teachkoreanz.com/terms/immigrat.htm check it out.
and one that doesn't work- ? http://www.moj.go.kr/mojeng/index.php. which is the Korean Immigration Bureau.
I'll start another thread about teaching and visa's etc. today. If anyone has accurate info to add, please come on over.
