Hi everyone, My husband just got to camp casey and I will be moving to the are in about a month. I was just wondering how the area is and if the apartments are decent because I will be coming with my one year old. I already know about the prostitutes and all that good stuff but if there is any other info I should need to know i'd appreciate it. Thanx

I was under the assumption that most of the DMZ camps would eventually close. I am probably way off when it comes to Casey though.

Hey you probably know more about it than I do. Are you close to the area, do you know anything about apartments in Dongducheon. I think thats the closest city to camp casey. Sorry for all the questions

Many of the camps will survive as a fraction of their original size, but Osan Air Base and Camp Humphreys will be the main hubs eventually.
I am not near Camp Casey, but hopefully someone else will post a reply. There will be plenty of realtors just outside the gate and the housing office will also have a list of homes. You will enjoy Korea as you won't be too far from Seoul. Mike

Apartments in Dongducheon
There are plenty of apartments to be had in Dongducheon. The cheaper ones are rat nests but you can find some decent ones for an affordable price near the camp. You can check bulletin boards in the USO or PX and they have apartments listed for rent. Also in different establishments in the ville their are flyers for apartments for rent. The new modern high rise apartments in Donguducheon are not located near Camp Casey. These apartments are really nice but are a long ways from the camp. If you drive your husband to work every day this is an option and it gets you away from the ville and the problems that come with it.
I recommend that your husband makes friends with one of the senior KATUSA soldiers to help him look for a place. There are many apartment owners who screw GI's on the leases so having a Korean proof the rental agreement can help prevent problems later. Also keep in mind that your husband needs permission from his unit's commander for him to move off post. This is not always a for sure thing. Camp Casey will be around through out your tour there because the camp will not close until the Camp Humphreys expansion is completed and so far they haven't even got the farmers to move off the bought land yet. It will be at least 3-4 years before USFK can think of closing Casey in my opinion. Hopefully you enjoy your tour in Korea. To bad you have to live in Dongducheon because IMHO the Casey area is a craphole but some of the surrounding scenery is beautiful. Just remember that a tour in Korea is what you make of it. If you spend all your time wandering in the ville and the Casey PX every day you are going to hate this tour. If you get out, learn the language and culture a little bit, make some Korean friends, and master the easy public transportation system in Korea, you will have a much more enjoyable tour. |

I concur with most of what GI Korea has stated. The exception is having a KATUSA check the lease agreement. You should take it to the legal or housing office. Although living in Korea presents many challenges for those not accutomed to living OS. It is very important that you be involved in community activities. With a 1 yo it may prove a little more difficult to get around. Hope you enjoy the cultural experience. Good luck. |
