Looking For Driving Directions from Yongsan to Osan Air Base

Hi:

I'm looking for driving directions from Yongsan to Osan. I saw directions posted for Osan to Yongsan but don't trust myself to do it backwards.

Anyone have directions?

Thanks for the help

Re: Looking For Driving Directions from Yongsan to Osan Air Base

I'll try. There are various ways to get on HWY 1 South. The absolute best way is to ride the bus from the Yongsan Bus station for 4000 won! Especially the first time. The second best way is take a friend who knows. Let him/her drive! If you are not an experienced driver in Korea, do that. I will not recommend experimentation the first time.
Once you get on the highway, Monday through Friday, ease your way to the left lane and remain there, or second from the left if you are afraid to drive fast. (On weekends, the Left lane is strictly for Buses! Keep out of it or get your picture taken and your husband's commander may get a ticket in the mail.)
A common way- cross the Banpo Bridge (Right turn out Gate 52) keep straight through Sobingo intersection, uphill keep far right and then NEXT left onto lower level of the bridge. (saves one stoplight at other end) If you end up on upper level don't panic, it is the same road, just go straight. Either way, AFTER the bridge, ease your way to the far left lane. You will have a couple of blocks to do this, forcing your way in, watching for any break, 1/2 car length is enough, and using your signal. Women usually put their arm out the window, waving it sort of like a left turn signal. That will bluff any vehicle except a Bus or Cement Mixer. After you are in the left lane, stay there and you will come to a light by the Express Bus Terminal. The Marriot Hotel is very tall on your left. You will have no choice but to turn left at the green arrow.
After turning left, stay in your lane (NOT the FAR right). After about three blocks DO get in the far right. Eventually you will see a sign, " Highway 1" and you are in line to get on it-one lane-far right. Once parallel to the highway,
start trying to turn across the traffic as soon as possible after the plastic traffic cones. Use the aforementioned procedure. Working your way to the far left or second from the left. This may take 5 miles at 80 KM per hour to accomplish. Don't panic. Just as you think, "Hey this isn't so bad", you will see big signs that will make you wonder about changing lanes. Don't. If Everyone is passing you, either get with the traffic or move right. Eventually you will see a sign that says toll booth. Carefully maneuver to a lane close to the left, pull a ticket like the vehicle in front does, and keep it to turn in at Osan City. Keep left or near left lanes, and follow the signs past Suwon or Suweon and it wont be long until you see Osan signs. Move appropriately to the right. Nothing says Osan Air Base. Turn at Osan. Pay the toll in won and give them the ticket. (Less than 3000). Turn left at the second intersection (light). Go a couple miles until it says Osan Air Base, right at the light. Be careful after that, I think it is easy to screw up now- you should turn left before the road veers right- we'll need more specific help from Osanites to find the right gate.
POVs can't go in straight, and you come out a different gate than you go in. But you elected to drive! Good Luck.

Mr. Joe's Directions worked for me. Here's how I edited them...

Mr. Joe helped me out! We picked up our POV on Thursday and his directions made it easy for us to get home. Here's how I edited them to work while I drove:

Yongsan to Osan
(If picking up a POV, the Vehicle Processing Lot is immediately across the street from Gate 52. We crossed the street, entered Yongsan for gas and lunch before beginning our trip back to Osan. That's where these instructions begin.)

1. Exiting Yongsan, turn right out of Gate 52.
2. Cross the Banpo Bridge. Keep straight through Sobingo intersection, uphill keep far right and then NEXT left onto lower level of the bridge.
3. AFTER the bridge, move to the far left lane. After you are in the left lane, stay there and you will come to a light by the Express Bus Terminal. The Marriot Hotel is very tall and on your left. You will have no choice but to turn left at the green arrow.
4. After turning left, stay in your lane (NOT the FAR right). After about three blocks DO get in the far right. Look for the sign directing you to "Highway 1" and you are in line to get on it-one lane-far right.
5. Once entering the highway you will eventually reach the tollgates. Keep right and avoid the hi-speed, prepaid toll lanes. Pull a ticket like the vehicle in front does, and keep it to turn in at Osan City.
6. Keep left or near left lanes, avoiding crossing the blue line that identifies the bus traffic lane. Follow the signs past Suwon or Suweon. You’ll see the sign indicating 8 KM to Osan City.
7. Move appropriately to the right. Exit HWY 1 at the Osan exit. Pay the toll in Won and give them the ticket. (Our toll on 9/4/08 was 2400 Won).
8. Turn left at the second intersection (light). It is approximately 3 miles to the Osan Air Base exit, turning right at the light. A good landmark that you about to reach the exit point in the KYY Zipper factory on your right.
9. Enter Osan at your gate of choice.

Cool Re: Looking For Driving Directions from Yongsan to Osan Air Base

Great job! Glad to assist. Since I wrote my directions, driving in the Bus Lane on any day is forbidden to private cars. Station wagons and Vans actually carrying eight passengers and emergency vehicles excepted.
I forgot to mention that certain gates are for vehicles with PASSES. Don't get in those lanes-look for a green light, just as in the States.

NOTE- In Seoul, the buses now drive in the center lanes of the streets in many places, not always on the far right. BE CAREFUL if you ever have to turn across the center lanes, even at a light. Buses often have a different light, or you may be stopped, waiting for a left turn arrow. Keep you left arm inside the car, and check your mirror before actually turning left on the atrrow! The buses often are running at excessive speed, and can't stop fast enough to avoid hitting you if you turn immediately-check your mirror first!
