Military Situation
Here is the story. You have Specialist Joe Snuffy, he met a filipino girl in south korea. His girl went back to her country. Joe Snuffy wants to marry her in that country. But LTC ****sucker threatens to give an Article 15 to Specialist Joe Snuffy if he goes to the country and marry her. There is no Battalion Policy letter or nothing. LTC ****sucker justifies his action because he believes by marrying in other countries you are by passing the new USFK Marriage packet, which states "That only applies if you are getting married in South Korea".
I think that the LTC is un-american it is our right to persue freedom and happiness. With all this crap, how can they make people stay in longer in the service??? Any thoughts or suggestions on this dilemma?? Ironsider |

Re: Military Situation
If I were Specialist Snuffy, and I were of legal age, I would speak to a chaplain that I trusted, and would get advice from the legal office, and then do what my conscience tells me. The legal office would advise of any Foreign Clearance Guide restrictions, and what could affect Snuffy's security clearance if he visited certain countries and if he married a person of certain nationalities. It is possible that the girl has a criminal record, or is infected with a transmittable disease, in her country or in Korea. The U.S. must check her out, as she may be ineligible for a U.S. visa. (An arrest for prostitution can be grounds for refusal of a U.S. visa.) Some are already married in their home country! Uncle Sam will assist you in discovering these things if you only cooperate.
The USFK guidelines are there to help prevent young folks from making decisions that could adversely affect their personal life and military career. the USFK rules are NOT new! The basic rules have been used since the 1950's, just allowed to fall by the wayside for a while. Your security clearance can, in some cases, be pulled until the spouse is investigated for any reason that might influence your loyalty to the U.S. I have seen cases, in Korea, where military members marrried without the required paperwork, and the member was removed from a cleared job, and made to serve in a position with no clearance required for up to 6 months, and somtimes with rank suspended due to insubordination. You could be transferred back to the U.S. if you were unable to do the job you were assigned, due to lack of clearance. You could be "Chaptered out". Use caution. |

Re: Military Situation
Security clearance has nothing to do it. I am talking Joe Snuff 11 Bravo, "I pull trigger and hear boom boom" I can understand if it was someone in MI or so SOCKOR, but it is not. A simple Support Battalion. I have a couple of soldiers that came to me and explained their story. I told them I would check it out for them.

My information is from personal experience and that of my personal friends. We were at Osan in 1959.60,61,& 62. Some had it rough, as they had TS Clearances and radio intercept jobs.
I had no loss of clearance, as my fiancee was a Korean who had already been investigated, as she was a base employee. (And no relatives living in North Korea.) I hope the guys understand that it is important that she gets checked out. Some of them may not want to live in the Philippines or Russsia in order to be with their wives! I had an airman once whose Filipino wife had 3 I.D. cards and was married to two other G.I.'s (At the same time!) She was cashing 3 checks at the Clark Air Base NCO Club every month, under 3 names! Beautiful, intelligent, sneaky, lying *itch! He lost all 3 stripes and was discharged due to her activities. Even a grunt deserves a clean start! |
