AFN Cable

Does anyone know what channels you get with the AFN Decoder off post? The PX only has 7 channels listed w/no option to upgrade and get the family and movie channel. That doesn't make sense to me. So, I was hoping that maybe the sign just hasn't been updated. Thanks in advance:)

Unfortunately, it's not a typo. Our AFN satellite only offered us about 7 channels, and the AFN satellite channels didn't carry any local information such as school closing announcements, etc, we were referred to Cable Channel 75 for those kind of announcements, but never once saw one.

The monthly fee for off base satellite is fairly inexpensive, less than 15.00 a month, but you also have to buy the satellite dish if you don't have one already at your residence, and that costs around 85.00...and you have to have a STAR card to get the decoder to begin with.

If you'll be moving on base soon, in all honesty, you might want to consider waiting until you move and getting cable on base, my understanding is that you have a lot more channels at your disposal then.

Dee :)

Re: AFN Cable

Dee is right, but what the people don't tell you is that you cannot set up the satellite dish which also costs you around $130 for someone to come out and set it up. so to get the dish and everything will cost you about $240.

On post we get 50 channels, all the good stuff.

Yep, they offer you a list of Korean contractors that can come set it up for you.

We lucked out when we got our decoder, apparently whoever was there before us already had the satellite set up and ready, all we had to do was plug in, so we didn't need the set up, and the one time we had trouble with the dish, we had a friend who was experienced in working with such things that was able to help us out gratis.

Chuck's absolutely right, it can definitely get costly.

Dee :)

Re: AFN Cable

Well that stinks...but atleast we'll have the remainder of football season!! We're not moving on post until sometime in the spring so it'll be nice to have until then. Although, I'm a little disappointed because more important than football was the family channel

Too bad I couldn't get it hooked up before the Colts play the Pats.

GO COLTS!!

Re: AFN Cable

I'm so happy that the cable company here wasn't one of the ones who stopped showing Prime. I was dreading having to get the AFN satellite and decoder. We don't have a Star card and it stinks that they require one.

Cool Re: AFN Cable

I hear that there is a "Requrement" to use a Star Card to get the cable from the PX? Sounds like a job for TELLYOURCONGRESS MAN!

No one can be forced to use a credit card in a free country.
If you find this to be true-go to ICE and complain to your USFK legal office.

I hear it is different in Japan.

$50-75 plus parts should be a fair price to set up your dish. I think the set-up folks are charging too much. I charged $45 per hour in the US when I was a dealer, to set up a dish purchased from another party. Honesty should require the seller to tell you that the $90 or so for the decoder and dish is only a PART of your cost. Be sure to complain to the PX Manager & military leaders if you feel the PX has been less than honest with you.

Re: AFN Cable

Gen Bell was kind of pissed about the star card thing. Don't know how long that will last.

Re: AFN Cable

Lt. Col. Lawhorn (loyal usfkforums member), remarked on a radio spot that AFN had been removed by some cable companies. Most of us knew by now that it was "unauthorized". He (AFN-Korea) has no connection with the Satellite System sold by the PX.
If you have complaints about the cost plus high installation cost and if they won't sell it to you without getting a credit card, complain to USFK and to the PX Manager.
I'm certain that they want you on that card, because it is easier to bill your card for monthly service, and costs involved in recovering the receiver if you don't pay on time, or leave town without paying. I know, because I was a Dish Network Dealer, and lots of folks in the US were slow to pay, or unwilling to pay final bills.

Re: AFN Cable

The Star card has been an issue brought up at every town hall meeting I've been to here. When the PX manager first got here several months ago he was caught off guard when he was asked about this because he had just come from somewhere in Europe and it's not a requirement there. At the next town hall meeting he let us know that he had asked why we require the card here and he was told that it was the way they insure authorized people are getting the decoders.
