Cool Re: AFN Cable

The way I read it, we will get a downgraded version of what we had. The TV signal on uhf TV doesn't reach very far.
In any event, it is obvious to even the most casual observer that the military in Japan get a better deal than we do! So in the interest of equal opportunity and treatment, all American citizens in the Republic of Korea who wish to complain about equal opportunity to receive bulletins and force protection information should feel free to write to their senators and congressmen, and address any goverrnment official who may visit Korea, asking why Japan gets free decoders and we don't! Tell the Ambassador to Korea, also! Don't bother USFK, they didn't ask for the money, or anticipate that Korea Broadcasting would act so quickly.
Do not forget to mention the "requirement" to use a PX Star credit Card- which is OK to use, but cannot be required if you wish to pay cash. That is patently illegal, even if someone thinks it is a "Safeguard" to prevent non-authorized users. Your ID card, and maybe a set of orders to Korea, should suffice. Go for it!

What if you can't or simply don't want a Star Card?

"But even if USFK personnel buy the satellite service, they won’t receive the Korea-produced information and news alerts in the near future. That localized information is inserted locally in South Korea, and will be available only to the on-base cable customers and those grabbing the over-the-air signal for at least “a few more months,” Lawhorn said" How does that work? Seriously, does someone sit up and push block or are we not going to be getting the stations at all even with the dish? I'm confused
On the command information side, this is what that means:

Right now if you get DTH (from the dish and through the decoder) you get the AFN channels directly from Riverside, CA. You don't get any Korea-specific information because that information is inserted after the signal comes from CA. You don't see the AFN Nightly News, the area announcements or even my commercial where I talk about the Korean cable issue.

Sometime soon (hopefully early DEC but I am not holding my breath) we will start sending all those products back to CA where the broadcast center will put them on the signal BEFORE it gets to the satellite and bounced over here.

Then, if you have a DTH system, you will see our Korea-specific products during the commercial breaks.

It has nothing to do with watching AFN Sports or AFN Movie ... it's all about what you see during the commercial breaks.

Re: AFN Cable

Ok I reread the post and still don't understand. Why can I not have the movie/family channel included with my 6 or 7 AFN channels off post? Why is it only on base?

Unfortunately, that is a matter we have no say in. We suggest you contact the Army Community Service on base.

If this practice is illegal, how to do you fight it in a legal way?

So you actually have the satellite dish and decoder box but because you live off base you can't get the AFN Movie or Family channel?

I just called my deputy and he says that he has DTH and gets all the channels for one price ... including AFN Movie and AFN Family. He told me he wasn't even offered 2 different packages.

Is this something you heard, or what happened to you?

Re: AFN Cable

There are 6 channels listed at the PX that come w/the satellite dish. It's the only package offered. It says AFN Korea, Atlantic Prime, Sports, Spectrum, Pacific, & Pentagon Channel. I think that was all of them. We don't have ours hooked up yet so I guess it's possible that we'd have all of the channels. I was just going by the sign at the PX. I'd be quite happy & surprised if I got all of them. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what we get when we are all hooked up...lol.

Re: AFN Cable

Wow! This keeps getting more complicated! A couple of friends were asking me about the removal of AFN from their cable. (It hasn't happened to every cable in Seoul yet.) These two people live in New apartments with many Americans where the U.S. Government pays their rent. Neither of their apartment owners will allow personal satellite antennas to be used! (That would possibly reduce the owners' revenue from the built- in cable system, and of course put "Unsightly" dishes all over the roof and patios.) So, some USFK folks are going to be out of luck, with no AFN until a remedy is found! I see a snowball effect coming. OUCH!

There is a method where the cable system could selectively inject AFN on the Apartment cable system only into authorized viewers apartments. It would not cost that much, involving one satellite dish on the roof and a distribution box. and I'm thinking the US Government could pick up the bill, after all, Korea is becoming oriented toward the FAMILY, right? Those folks putting in new apartments in Pyongtaek- start paying attention NOW! Do you want to rent to GI's?
