If you have a dish you pretty much get the same signal from the states that AFN Korea gets. The local AFN station basically has their own disk. They receive the signal and then they add their spots and send it out through the air.

So when you get the dish for off post you can't see local info or even watch AFN Korea nightly news.

hope that helps.

Except for the fact that one of the channels is AFN Korea...right? It seems there would be local info on there. Ah, what a nightmare...can't wait to move on post!

When you have that rank, conversations don't go "GEN whoever this is GEN BELL"

conversations go, hello Jack this Doug....How is you lovely wife and family doing Jack....Good glad to hear that....Hey Jack, I have a problem in Korea with cable...I'll look into it Doug...Thanks Jack....

I believe that it's AFN Prime you get on the dish...not AFN Korea.

To a certain extent that might be a little true. But just because they are a GEN doesn't mean they can have absolute power. They can call the AFN commander and ask him to cover a event for the news...it will happen!! But as far as content of the station. No, he has no say, and frankly he wouldn't care about that kind of stuff.

I remember being on news shoots and having the officers at the event telling me who to interview. It wasn't the story I wanted to write. Maybe it was a live fire exercise and they wanted me to interview the Colonel, but my story was on this new private and his experience on his first time training in Korea. I would get the Colonel's interview (you have to be political), but I wouldn't use it.

Usually Higher ranking officers understand that we have a job, that we know what it is better then they do. They just would let us do it. It's the O-1's through O-3's that were the biggest problems. For the most part.

I would have 1SG's yelling at one of his SSGT's to get him going to do something at an exercise and then turn to me (an PFC at the time) and talk to me like I was just some guy hanging out with him. It was the coolest feeling. I felt like, "wow, I'm AFN and I'm special." It is the best job in the Military.

Exactally my point, if we raise enough fuss then he WILL address the sitution......

It is also the thinking, like your statment "FRANKLY HE WOULD NOT CARE" I believe is the reason that smaller problems are not brought up high enough because people continue to say He is to busy to worry about small things like that.......When small things like that are what he wants to hear

Thumbs up Re: AFN Cable

All kidding aside... No, I don't mean that..
Generals don't attain that rank without being good at what they do, or by not making waves. Most of them care for the best interest of their troops more than anything on earth. They do often have power to overcome a lot of bureacracy and get to the heart of the matter.
USFK has a difficult mission babysitting a lot of inexperienced young soldiers and airmen. Some away from home for the first time, and some still willing to push boundaries to see how far they can go! I certainly don't envy the jobs of the USFK leaders.
Our leaders have a lot on their mind, and each day the priorities change, depending on the urgency. Today was one of those days, hosting the most powerful military officer in the free world, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Our AFN problems will get their day in court, we will just have to wait out the priorities. I know Lt. Col. Lawhorn won't rest until AFN is available to everyone as quickly and as painlessly as possible, and knowing him personally, you can take that to the bank!

Re: AFN Cable

Well, I appreciate the kind words ... I would certainly encourage anyone who is making a complaint (to IMCOM, Housing or whomever) to mention if their landlord is prohibiting them from having a satellite dish.

A bit of clarification on networks and channels:

The channel we are talking about is AFN Prime Pacific ... as opposed to AFN Prime Atlantic (Europe) or AFN Prime Freedom (downrange)

AFN Korea is the name of the network That's what I'm in command of...

AFN Prime Korea used to be a channel as well, separate from AFN Prime Pacific (serving those stationed in Japan)... but AFN Prime Korea and AFN Prime Pacific were merged in early 2006 to free up a channel, on which to debut AFN Extra

At the network, AFN Korea, we don't control or create any programming other than the AFN Nightly News (M-F at 1845 and 2200) and the 10-minute, AFN Frontline in Review (THU at 1950). We also create TV spots and advertisements, (like the "dude looks like a lady" spot where the guy's drunk and doesn't realize he's talking to a man in a wig). Unfortunately, we aren't able to show any of this stuff on the DTH system for a few months until our Titan system comes online.

Hope this clears up some of the confusion!

Re: AFN Cable

Thanks for the clarification on the channels!

I asked a neighbor who has the at home dish and she's getting the family channel, movie channel, etc. I think that's a good deal for $13/month! I'm glad we got our decoder when we did. There was a waiting list and I think when Prime goes off the Korean cable there's going to be a mad dash to the Px.

Cool Re: AFN Cable

Here is the article that proves that our European and Japanese military counterparts don't have to pay $13 a month for an AFN Satellite Decoder. It is FREE! We are not getting equal treatment!

Read: http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?s...8&archive=true

To be fair, Korea has only recently turned toward nurturing a Family Atmosphere, and no doubt USFK will be embarrassed by the situation of inequality, and will find a way to catch up with the rest of the Leaders serving Americans overseas!
Also, forcing us to use a STAR Credit Card is really bordering on illegal! I can understand it is a good way to assure monthly payments, and putting money back into the system through BX money flowing back into MWR, etc., but let's hold out for Equal Treatment! Feel free to write to ICE or anyone you wish, including your congress person. Please don't discredit USFK, just ask for free AFN Decoder funding and equal treatment! (You will still have to pay someone for a dish and an install. We'll work on improving that later. )

Re: AFN Cable

I actually filed a complaint about this when I arrived in Korea and the answer I got was almost logical! They really want to ensure that only AUTHORIZED personnel have AFN decoders, and one very good way to control that is to require Star card payments because only military folks can qualify for a Star card. I did reply to that and ask why the rental fee was not reimbursed upon returning the decoder and the answer to that was "well nobody ever suggested that before, we will look into it" and guess what... nothing got done!

I personally feel that it is pretty unreasonable to expect people to fork out cash for that stuff, and it is the number one reason why I bought a Slingbox instead!
If you can hook it up with someone in the US that has 500k or better upload speeds, you can get damn near perfect picture quality and a full US programming schedule!
