Looking for Pictures
I was stationed in Korea 4 times, with the last being in 1981. The places that I am looking for pictures of are, Uncheon City, and a small village called Paegui-ri, also called Baekui-ri.
Both are located in the north central part of the country near Rodriguez Range, with Uncheon City located on highway 43, and Paegui-ri located on highway 37 where it crosses the Hantan River. Camp Kaiser was located next to Uncheon, and Camp St Barbara was located next to Paegui-ri. With all the growth in Korea over the years, I would love to see what these places look like now. |

Welcome, fellow old timer. I'll work on that for you. I get up that way about once or twice a month. Give me some time and to get my new maps I'll get back to you. I was at CRC in Uijongbu in 75-76. We went over to Camp Sears on Saturdays, as they had an evening Mass at the chapel. I had suits made up in Paju-ri for $14. Somehow they shrank over the years, and don't fit anymore! There used to be an Army camp there where helicopters were parked by the road. A club across the street had a sign "Koreans only". A mile or so up the road was Camp John Pelham. The Sign at the gate said," If you enter this compound needing a haircut, you will not be allowed to leave until you have a haircut in accordance with the instructions of the commander." I have a photo of that somewhere.
You really need to hop on over if you're able, and look around! If you have seen the Seoul photos with skyscrapers, you can't imagine it happening to CRC and Casey, but it is. Suits are up to $100 or more. (Seoul $250-500)! |

Re: Looking for Pictures
I was at CRC on my last tour in 81. Korea sure changed over the years. My 1st tour was 60-61, when I was at Camp Casey and also Camp Kaiser. I got to see just about every road and camp north of Seoul.
On my second tour from 69-70, I was at Camp Stanley and Camp St Barbara. This was the most memorable tour of my 22 years. My 3rd was down south at Camp Humphries. Looks like we will be there for some time. I would appreciate any help you can provide with pictures. |

Re: Looking for Pictures
Mr Joe, if you get to these areas, and can get a few pictures of where the Camps were, that would be great. I just do not know what is involved. If I was able, I would take a few weeks vacation, catch a Hop, and come poke around some. Would love to see the country again. My Wife is not in good health, so being gone for more than 2 days even is not option.
OH, by the way, I was driving a old M211 in Seoul the day Gen Park Chung Hee took over. There were so many tanks and machine gun postions set up, I didnt know if the North had came south, or what? :) |

Don't worry- we'll put up some pictures-maybe some before and after...
Sorry to hear your wife is ill. Take as good care of her as you can, a good woman is irreplaceable. Kind of like a bird dog, they take a long time to train... I was at Osan AB while you were driving through Seoul that fateful day when the military coup put out Syngman Rhee (이 성 만) and General Park took over. I later drove m-35's and my jeep up at Camp Rd Cloud in '75-'76. |

Re: Looking for Pictures
Mr Joe
I can't wait to see the pictures your going to post. I was at Humphries (71-73) 45th Trans co. The place has taken on some remarkable changes over time. I would like to come over and visit some time in the near future, just to see for myself, the changes that have taken place. I had a Korean friend that taught Taekwondo at Humphries back then, and if I could locate him now, I'd be there for sure by next summer. Take care Johnnie Rouse |

I had Google Earth for a while, and for the longest the area north of the (Camp) wasn't clear. Within the last few weeks thou the view is a lot better. There has been so many new roads added over the years it was very hard just to figure out the layout of the roadways, as they compared to the early 70's. |

Re: Looking for Pictures
R228 is a big airfield but I have never seen airplanes actually use it. I know a few years back the FSB was using the airfield to set up shop on when our brigade would roll out to the field. That is reason why I have been to R228. It was really run down with a small garrison of ROK soldiers there.
Camp St. Barbara is still there but is now a ROK compound. You can always tell the ROK compounds that used to be US military bases because of the American military looking buildings. I will be visiting Korea again this summer and will have to drive up there and take a few pictures as well. |
