Contracting for the military..
Hey,
I was going through my options for when my Enlistment will be up. I was wondering. How is it possible to become a military contractor?? I'm just curious how to even start. Kind of a broad question. I mean after I finish my degree and get some certifications. (I'm a 3C0) Do you have to apply like every other job?? Or actually any IT job in general. Whats a good site to start with?? Thank you |

Re: Contracting for the military..
My youngest son was hired by a big name defense contractor in Korea shortly after he graduated from high school. He's a self-taught computer person (programming, building, security, networking, hacking - pretty much you name it - he can do it).
He had completed six Microsoft certs prior to getting hired. Other than that, he had no job experience (in any field), security clearance, or computer education (other than high school computer classes). Based on what I saw with his hiring, the employer couldn't have cared less about where he had worked (i.e., job experience) or how much or where he was educated. They were only concerned with his actual, demonstrable computer skills and knowledge. He's been with them for several years now and is doing quite well. |

Re: Contracting for the military..
I would recommend staying in the military for 20 years. Get out when your 40. Get "free" money for the rest of your life. You would still be young and you could contract or GS by then. It is something I wish I did. I got out after 4 years. I am thinking of getting back in.

I DID ALL THE ABOVE.
I got out of the AF after 4. Went to college for a year. Didn't like attempting to sell vacuum cleaners, waterless cookware, or encyclopedias. Couldn't imagine working in a factory or a coal mine for 30 years;(Whistle blows, you eat lunch, whistle blows, back to work. Rejoined the AF; went to radar maintenance school. They paid for night school for 8 years; sent me to a University for my last 6 months to graduate, then to officers school. Commissioned at age 27, I retired after a total of 23+ years. Worked for a contractor in Nevada for 5 years. Got into AF civil service for 11 years. Resigned for personal family reasons. (Mother- in- law was ill.) Tried retirement. Didn't like it. Re-joined civil service (Army) in Korea. I have 35 years total in govt. service. I work because I like it, not because I have to. I also recommend 20 years Air Force retirement. If you enjoy being infantry or artillery, then do that. Do something you like and save for a rainy day! ![]() |

Re: Contracting for the military..
Jobs that offer a pension - especially one that starts from the day you retire - are really becoming rare. I'm really glad I decided to stay in the military until retirement.
