You wanna know the really scary thing about driving in Korea?

It's actually a lot better than it used to be!

My theory is the dramatic increase in female drivers (virtually unheard of up until the late '80s) has watered down the level of testosterone behind the wheel and thereby reduced the amount of road rage/Nascar obstacle course driving (i.e., description of the manner in which most Korean men drive).

Thank you Mr.Joe I finally getting used to korean HOT weather...

anyway I will be traveling to DAE JON this friday for my Physical test, hopefully I get at least 3 등 급 that I can get into KATUS.
but I have problem atm, I have enrolled to TOEIC test september 24th, and the test result wont be avaliable for 20days after the test, which means I wont be seeing test result until mid october.

I know that KATUS intake is in 1st OCTOBER, so I am worried that I wont have TOEIC test result before the intake... (got any bright ideas?)

I hear there is special EARLY toeic test (have to pay little bit more)...

I am worried that I wont be able to go KATUSA due to this... bad timeing .

anyway I would like to meet you guys :)

thank you all for help :)

Joe from down under. :) 충 성

Re: ROK millitary service- Info please

umm.. that link is broken or I am not able to see it.

anyway Thank you for looking up for me.

right now I am @ Physical test centre. I am about to go and do my test.

As far as I know, it seems pretty hard to get into KATUSA for anyone.

wrong timing doesnt help either!

also BTW (this should be post other section) How do I interchange my Australian Driving lisence into KOREAN one?

can some one help on this? do I have to pay money? know of any web site?

I am sure many of you had to change US driver lisence into Korean one right?

THank you all

regards
Joe from Down Under :)

Re: ROK millitary service- Info please

Update on my situatoin.

ok I did my Physical test and got myself grade 2.
so now I have to go, I reallly hope that I will be KATUSA working as MEDIC or in Medical Field. I have 6 years university degree in Biomedical science. so I can be Field 68 -- Medical 의무 or is it changed to this "메딕이 2003년에 68번에서 92로 바뀌었습니다. 92Y입니다"

I found these lists from here http://www.katusa.pe.kr/bbs/view.php?id=pds1&no=47

I know you(admin) not allow linking from outside but this link is very useful for all KATUSA related people. most of you I presume.

Thank you all :) and wish me luck.

Re: ROK millitary service- Info please

We all wish you good luck!
The answer about your drivers license I don't know. I know one thing, you won't be needing to worry about driving for a year or two, whether you get in ROK ARMY or KATUSA. You won't have time enough, nor money enough.

Pvt Yun, Yongsan KATUSA, has sent you an email, and he is still your best source of information. He told me that it is all up to the ROK Army from now on, and the US Army probably has no chance to influence who gets in to the Katusa Program. They could decide to make you a truck driver, or a medic, or a KATUSA.
If anyone reading this knows a high ranking Officer in the US or Korean Army, who might help a young man with a Great Degree in BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE, and could help him get into the Katusa program and utilize his talents for the best interest of all concerned, speak now!

Re: ROK millitary service- Info please

Hello all :) It has been more than a month since I came to australia. Wow this place is very different from Perth Australia.

Update... yesterday I got a letter from Manpower Administration. I finally got enlisted 26th september. I expected to go into KATUSA but I dont think It will happen, because of the my timining issue I wont be able to apply for KATUSA as I wanted (i guess go in fast and out fast). so I will start my bootcamp on 26th of september at the 306 support '306 보충대' at the 의정부 in seoul.
I have sent off all my qualification and chances are I will be going into as Medic '의무병' . I hope that I can picked out and work in hospital. also as long as I finish 2 years of army serivce safely I'll be very happy.

I read that there will be intake of KATUSA on 9th septemer - 19th september, Its pitty that I can not do this...(I had to apply 30 days before I got enlisted, I try to extend it but its too hard to extend it )

I really wanted to do KATUSA but I guss it wont be hapenning for me. I am very dispointed .

anyway I am sure I will do well under ROK ARMY, even though It wont be same as KATUSA.

anyway Thank you all for helping me out and keep you guys updated...

Thank you all

regards
Joe- from DownUnder

Re: ROK millitary service- Info please

Well, Uijongbu is not so bad, it is a real city, not out in the "Boondocks" as they say in Australia. I don't think you will be at a "Hospital" though. Maybe giving shots to soldiers, and treating sprains and bruises. Whatever happens, two years will go quickly. My only advice is do whatever they ask, and don't question their reasoning, or their abysmal lack of medical knowledge. Maybe in a few months you can get a day off, and come to see us in Seoul. Keep in touch.
